hi, i also would like to know about the problems or advantages of different distributions. speaking for myself i use a suse 7.2 (with 2.4.4 kernel) which are 7 CDs of software. it was easy to install, i didn't have problems to compile Pd only gem used another glut-library (which was on the CD, but not installed by default). and there are alsa 0.5-drivers for my (auto-detected and configured) soundblaster-card. i don't know about installing drivers for other cards (RME for example). but I heard, Guenter is working on an own "multimedia/sound-distribution"(?). marius.

rh7 finally made me switch to debian. it takes some time to explore and get familiar with it. but it's worth it. the system in general is more transparent, has less traps and hooks, package management is much more advanced, and a stable release is really stable (i'd say, rh7 is more 'testing' than woody, debian's current testing distro) of course, there's still enough to fiddle around...

potato is best stable debian distro, 2.2 based and extremely easy to maintain/upgrade (apt-get has even gone kernel-able, by now!)
but I heard, Guenter is working on an own
"multimedia/sound-distribution"(?).
marius.
DEMUDI (Debian Multimedia Distribution) is @: http://www.demudi.org/
guenter's page about it: http://gige.xdv.org/pages/DeMuDi
Thing is...if you have a well-configured debian potato box, with low latency kernel patches applied, then you're already very close to demudi, minus the amazing amount of sound software included, etc. In any case, more than any other distributions (Dead Rat, etc.), Debian allows for such sorcery as dynamically switching kernels (like modules), so you could run a stable potato (...) and demudi on the same system, healthily.
PD ~loves~ debian , once you get past soundcard configs and kernel tweaking, coz unlike heavier distros, you can scale down gracefully and get much more transparent control over processes, background stuff, etc.

I'm currently using Mandrake 7.2 - which has proved a bad move (from RH 6) as it does not configure my SoundBlaster 16 properly - I have to do it by hand each time I boot into Linux. Which is probably why I don't boot into it very often! RH6 didn't have this problem. According to the Mandrake 8 box, it uses the unofficial gcc 2.96 that was such a problem with Redhat 7. Does Mdk 8.1 fix that? I have heard that RH 7.2 does restore the proper 2.95 gcc.

No, MDK still has 2.96. I had a lot of problems with MDK, especially when compiling C++. Their customization of the Linux base system and tools goes a bit too far, IMHO. It's extremely easy to set up though (which takes away all the fun :-) ).

Mdk8.1 ships with gcc 2.96 and optionnally gcc 3.01.
Compiling pd with gcc3.01 (wich is very picky) and alsa0.9 produces an executable which segfaults when you start the audio. (btw fiddle won't compile).
With gcc2.96 pd does compile and run but the "paf~" object is wrong. It clips the output badly.
I havn't yet succeeded in compilling gem ( i may be faulty here )
