Greetings off-topic people
Does anyone have any experience of turning a laptop LCD screen into a normal screen? So, I bought a mini-ITX PC in the summer, to cure my laptop overheating woes (and give me a whole lot more juice).
The laptop in question has undergone a thoroughly new level of destruction through teaching, and now there are holes everywhere.
I wonder, do any of you guys have any experience in ripping a laptop screen out and using it as a SVGA monitor, or any other interface type for graphics? My new PC has various sockets and a full graphics card (it's not as small as Miller's, but still small enough to gig, unlike my screens)

Hey Ed,
As fun as it sounds, my guess is that its not feasible since the interface between the graphics chip and the LCD might be proprietary. SVGA is the interface between the graphics chip and the outside world. LCD screens are cheap, and they come in all sorts of sizes.

My newest solution is to get a $180 netbook to supply screen, keyboard, and mouse; use an ethernet cable and ssh over to the box.
One wants some sort of backup in case the box doesn't boot, such as an extra system disk :)
cheers Miller

As far as i know it is not cheap and easy:
http://hackaday.com/2011/09/09/putting-laptop-lcds-to-use-with-an-fpga/ http://hackaday.com/2012/10/25/laptop-lcd-resurrection-gets-some-clean-packa...
Ouch!
That pretty much looks like building your own graphics card adaptor board! I think I'll look at alternative options. The screen is the only bit that usually comes in a clunky, wonky and not-so-cuboid form, and doesn't fit in a backpack (my large ITX PC _just_ fits into a camping rucksack, with a keyboard and mouse).
Perhaps the netbook idea is a winner. I wanted some real-estate, but perhaps I should be looking at better ways of controlling things rather than having lots of GUI.

Some at work produced a portable second screen out of his bag last week. Something I'd not seen before.
I think it may have been this one: http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/accessories/lenovo-thinkvision-lt1421.aspx It might be a little more pricey than using an old laptop screen but a lot easier.

That looks interesting, but it doesn't work with Linux yet. There does seem to be one that does though, and I like the fact that it's just 13.3 inch: http://fooninja.net/2012/09/01/onlap-portable-screen-for-linux/
