$ (insert and mount USB media that is big enough to hold your disk) $ dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/media/yourdisk/backup.img

You may also run the machine in maintenance mode before backing up!
Boot : linux init 1

Or even better: Do this by booting from a live-CD like Knoppix as you would need to do when restoring a backup to a new disk later. ;)
