one more: it seems there are ready-made serial DACs: http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/1121 it has max. 5 MHz sample rate... don't know if it will work at 9600 too.... gr~~~

Has anyone ever seen an RS232 sound card? I am looking for a sound card to hook up to old wifi routers. They will run Pd, and have serial ports built-in, so it would be awesome to be able to hook up a serial sound card to them. It is possible to add USB to many wifi routers, but it is a lot more work.
There was software called MODPLAY for DOS, which included a plan for a DIY parallel port soundcard running at 9.6 kHz, 8 bit, as this type of soundcard was directly supported by that software. It uses only resistors, as a kind of DIY DAC chip. It's better to use an actual DAC chip, unless your resistors are very precise.
It could be adapted for serial port if you have a RS232 deserialiser chip with enough bits in it. I don't know what name you will find it under. It's also possible that you have to use a combination of two chips for that, e.g. a RS232 chip with a separate deserialiser. I don't know what's the real name for a deserialiser. If you can't find one, you need in turn to make it combining a mux and a 8-bit memory.
Alternately, a PIC can function as a soundcard. This is probably easier for anyone who is more into software than into electronics.
