Could be system permissions for reading the microphone. Try going to the Security panel and enable Microphone access for Pd.
Normally, it should show the request dialog automatically, but sometimes it doesn't, maybe due to running different versions of Pd on the same system? I'm not sure off the top of my head.

Hi,
When I switch on DSP using Pd-0.51 (stable build) on macOS Catalina 10.15.7, I get the following error: error opening audio: Internal PortAudio error
Any ideas how to resolve this issue?
Best,
Ricky

Recently i had this problem with my fork (after reseted all the authorizations on my computer from the terminal). To make it ask again i had to change the info.plist and the entitlement for code signing < https://github.com/Spaghettis/Spaghettis/commit/d9a248344af32e19b8f26ec0b227... >.
Note that AFAIK even if the microphone is not authorized, the DSP should work (with silence instead).

You can also reset Microphone permissions system-wide, then (re)start Pd. In Terminal run:
tccutil reset Microphone
That should trigger the dialog, although it will also reappear for other programs as well.

This is already a PR which updates the entitlements for a related problem:
https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/1145 https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/1145
Miller / IOhannes, I'm thinking of merging this into the develop branch for Pd 0.51-3 as it would help solve this "sometimes the security dialog shows sometimes not" issue on macSO 10.15+. It's another one of those little paper cuts...

Yes, do please (including mergine pull 1145 I suppose) and I'll go on and grab it all - it looks lke it's much more likely to fix problems than to create any new ones.

Ok, merged into the develop branch.
In looking through the Apple entitlements docs, there may be a new key to allow sending.recieving multicast, but that's not something until macOS 11+. I left it out for now as it's still a developer key and not finalized yet.

(moving the previous email back to this thread from the Pd-0.51-test5 release thread)
I was also hoping that setting the security entitlements explicitly would help.
Ricky, then we need more info:
I'm still running macOS 10.14 and the 10.15 machines at work are all out for use during the lockdown here, so I cannot test it personally.
Miller, perhaps what we need is a better Portaudio error message as this may be unrelated to the permissions. I can look into that now.
Also, can yon run the pd core on the command line to see any prints from Portaudio:
This will start the core with a Terminal window.
