hello,
i've been doing some patches with PD/GEM and using the knobs on my midi keyboard to control things. the problem is that the resolution with midi is not good enough. what is a better way to control objects externally? knobs, sliders, etc...
thanks, paris

you might want to take a look at the usb multio box from me :
it is a do-it-yourself electronic project that will give you plenty of i/o to your computer, with a really nice resolution (12 bit for ad and da). you can hook up faders to it, knobs, sensors, button, lights.... whatever you want .....
if you arent able to do such a project yourself, you may know someone who can help you with that. if anything fails, i may be able to help you with that as well.
also, right now i am creating a "stripprd down" version of that. it will have the same extendability, but fit on a single board and is powered bny the usb instead of a extra wallwart. that should be ready in about a month or two.

hi chris,
if i was more comfortable at assembling electronics, this would be the way to go for sure. i have a friend who is better at it though, so i'll pass the url on and see if it looks like something he can handle.

AID is easier to build, but much MUCH more simple, and not quiet done yet. Only 8 10bit A2D converters.

For the solder-challenged, STEIM will be releasing a very inexpensive AD converter setup quite similar to the AID project sometime this summer or fall. It will have 8 or 12 (can't recall!) inputs for external sensors which should be pretty usable with whatever you want to plug in: potentiometers, sliders, joysticks, bend/pressure sensors, acellerometers, light sensors, etc etc. Should market for less than EUR 200, and work with the HID objects I imagine.
wait and see, d.
hi,
wouldnt it be a good idea to put our efforts together, so that we can make something that is compatible to each other ? i mean, it seems that more than one person is working on usb input controller hardware, and many things are already done ..... that all combined should give a nice project ....
greets,

here is another simple USB/pic combo that might be useful. we are building lots of variations of these here in santa barbara now.
http://www.create.ucsb.edu/~dano/CUI/
best -august.
indeed... Sorry I've been off this thread, was in Helsinki for pixelACHE.org the last week.
AID is different in design aims to the USB HID interface that chris is working on, since its meant to be dead cheap ($30CAN) and easy for a novice to build. What are the design aims of the steim project? Indeed re-doing HW work already done in the open-source world is inefficient. We could probably discuss this on the aid@interaccess.org mailing list, since its currently very low traffic, or is there an other location for the discussion?

Interpolation helps a lot, pixelTANGO includes "smooth" which uses low-pass filtering to interpolate... worth a try...
You can get the abstractions snapshot at the bottom of the page at:
http://www.tot.sat.qc.ca/eng/pixeltango.html
Also using the 14bit midi controllers should be more than enough.

I personally think that Behringer's BCF2000 is brilliant. http://www.behringer.com/BCF2000/index.cfm?lang=ENG. It is MIDI, but all of the faders and rotaries can be set to send 14-bit abs or rel. Is 0-16383 enough?

hello,
I also think it's a good interface, but i don't think you can have 16384 faders value. i tried my brother one few months aggo, and the best thing i can have was 10 bits resolution (last 4 bits vas always 0). the 10th bit was filtered to avoid permanent midi flow because of noise on the converter. so don't expect more than 9 bits precision (unless i miss somthing)...

Hmm..mine gives true 14-bit resolution, perhaps this was fixed with the more recent firmware (v1.07). However, it is only really worthwhile using such massive resolution with the rotary encoders, the faders are only sensitive enough to use with 8-bit, beyond this an increment of 1 becomes extremely difficult to achieve making the extra (software) resolution pointless.

Yes. You need to use nrpn. The unit then sends the data in 4-byte chunks containing the following:
CC99 NRPN MSB, CC98 - NRPN LSB CC06 - Data MSB, CC38 -Data LSB.
So the data stream needs parsing.

Ive been at a loss as how to implemt this with my bcr in pd. How do implemnt this if I want to use several controllers?

I use a nice abstraction by David McCallum called nrpnin, you can get it at http://www.mentalfloss.ca/sintheta/html/downloads.html. I can't think of a more elegant way of doing this besides writing an external.
To use multiple controllers, just use multiple instances and specify a nrpn and channel as arguments.

I meant multiple rotaries, which I don't need multiple instances for right?
Cheers Anton
Absolutely. nrpnin behaves just like ctlin, so you can just pack and route the different controllers or whatever. However, I mostly only use one or two controllers at a time. You may need to add extra instances of the abstraction to cope with multiple continuous control if you have a lot of simultaneous data, but I'm not sure.

Hi, Ive no idea how to compile stuff but would really like to get PD GEM PDP and PiDiP running on my machine. Powerbook OS X 10.3.7 I have PD 0.37 installed with bits of files all over the place. Its a mess. Could anyone recommend an installer or a set of instructions to me to get this going. Will I have to use fink? Cause thats where it all went crazy last time I tried the pidip bit. At this stage Id like to delete usr/local/pd and usr/local/lib/pd and begin afresh.Would deleting the sw folder get me back to where I was before fink went mad? Any suggestions would be most welcome. thanks nicky
here's what i did and i'm pretty happy with my setup:
http://pcm.peabody.jhu.edu/~sburt/pd/installing_pd_os_x.html
"Pd-0.38-3.app" in there that i can double-click to start up pd, or launch from the dock (which is what i do currently)
http://ydegoyon.free.fr/pidip.html
"pdp_pidip_osx" directory with "sw" and "usr" directories in it
"usr/local/lib/pd/pdp_pidip_osx" directory, but the directions there did n't work for me (but maybe they will work for you), so i just copied whatever directories and files i didn't already have to my /sw and /usr directories
"INSTALL_NOTES.txt" file
apple's installer or dev tools), then launched the pd app with a convenient double-click and bingo -- pdp and pidip libraries are loaded (along with gem since that gets installed by the pd installer)
no building or fink or anything, and so far everything seems to be working. _ j

Under 0.38, the .pdrc is now known as .pdsettings. You should see the offending library in there somewhere.
