The convention is over already, since yesterday afternoon.
IRC has been set up for much longer than the convention. We've had the #dataflow channel (irc.freenode.net) for 6.5 years now (close to 5 years under that name). Nowadays, there is 25-35 users logged in on average (sometimes 20, sometimes 40). There is also the #desiredata channel for developers, testers, translators, etc., of DesireData. Contrary to what happens in Piksel, IRC was almost not used during the convention, as far as I know. There were a few technical problems with the network at SAT, but McGill did not provide any internet access - not that this is a bad thing, as it keeps people more focused on "here and now".
We have some footage taken by volunteers, but it's not edited yet.

Me too - it was a really awesome time and I am so thankful to all the organizers and the great people we met. Montreal is a really nice place and I can't wait to come back. I am going to be working on the footage that I took with Greg Pond and we might have something to show in the next couple of months, maybe sooner. Should be fun.
And Roman, email me and let's do a NetPD jam when you have some time back home! I have been experimenting with the patches a little bit.

Yes, it was great go see/meet everyone! Huge thanks to the organizers, who did a lot of work to plan such a nice series of events over the week. The chance to meet people who were previously just names on the pd-list was perhaps the most important part of the event, and I think this mingling and sharing of ideas fired up much enthusiasm amongst all the developers and users in attendance. Hope to see everyone again next time, -David M.

Oh yeah, completely forgot that one. Anyway, I think people should've been directed to #dataflow instead of making a new channel, but if people just don't have the time to go on IRC it doesn't really matter.

Well, if someone gets really inspired and organized, there might be a

I hope the next one will happen sooner rather than later. It was

Because of being on my ass moneywise at the moment the air fare completely demolished me this year. It upset me not to be able to attend because of that. Let's face it the cost of international air travel is only going up and fast. More regular smaller meetings at more diverse geographical locations are the way to go. Perhaps holding conferences on multiple concurrent sites with extensive videolinking. (Us Pd people should be *pioneering* this sort of thing) - a global community built from cellular (chapters) in a network. I was thinking of saying "No to Sao Paulo, yes to Barcelona" but then I heard, "what about South Americans who are probably *less* able to afford traveling to Europe than we are of travelling to S.America?" So the option to support is BOTH. At the same time.

Yeah, I was bummed that everyone couldn't make it. That is
definitely the downside and the weak point of such conferences. It
can cost a lot of money to organize and then it costs each person
money to get there. I think the Montréal crew did a good job of
defraying those costs as much as they could. I thought it was a
brilliant idea to have the local artist community host us in their
homes. It saves a ton of money on hotels, and I think it's much more
fun to stay with people than in hotels anyway.
The big advantage is bringing together a local community and allowing
the international community to get together, exchange ideas, and
discuss the common bonds. Apparently, there is a pretty active
community in a number of places that are not represented on the Pd
lists or forums. For example, at the PdCon, I learned about an
active community in Bulgaria and Sao Paulo.
One thing that we could strive for in the next PdCon is more
collaboration from the community at large. For example, a place to
organize carpools/rideshares so that people can pay less for
transportation. I think we could come up with a lot of ideas to make
the next PdCon even more accessible than the Montréal people made it.

You can guess all that you want. It's the same as it was two weeks ago when I was saying the same thing: we don't really know. We're still just making speculations on where it could be in the next few years. London. Barcelona. Roma. São Paulo. Istanbul. New York. Sounds incredible, and yes, it's not very credible at the moment, it's still almost just name-throwing. I tried talking to a few people about this, but that's like 0.1% of the job.
There ought to be dossiers about each of the cities so that they can be compared and chosen. Each report should include something about who uses pd in that city, which activities are pd-oriented, how the community is organised, which universities and artist-run centres want to give support to a pd convention, whether the national art council(s) or city art council(s) are interested to back it, other possible local funding, possibility of external funding (e.g. any funding programmes that can be applied to a collaboration between Montréal and/or Graz and the hosts of the 3rd convention). From that point, plans for 3rd, 4th, 5th conventions can be laid out according to forecasts of readiness of each city's community.
Montréal took several years to get ready, in terms of key people deciding to get involved and reserve the time to work on it... I remember trying to throw the idea around in 2004. It wasn't quite credible back then... nor during 2005... I mean in terms of having it happen during the following year: once the team is there and ready, it can take about a year of actual work.
About 2008, the thing is that since it takes over a whole year to organise something like the Montréal convention, and no-one wanted to discuss a 3rd convention before the 2nd was over, so it'll take at least a few months before the selection of the next city actually happens, and from that point it'll take roughly a year, plus or minus a few months. At the end of that process it'll already be 2009.
If you have magic shortcuts that you can take out of your hat, you are more than welcome (and more than encouraged) to share them.
Pd Convention is not a franchise, so anyone could actually do something completely on their own and call it Pd Convention 2008, but it'd be a shame if it's not roughly the same size as any of the last two conventions, especially as I know several people who would like to give a hand in making it big enough, no matter where it actually happens.

yeah, it was a great week, i enjoyed it a lot. i had (still have) a very good time in montréal. i am very greatful for all the work, that you - darsha, alex, kyd, marc, andrew and many others - spent to make this happen, but it was really worth it. not only the fact, that you did it, also how you did it, was just lovely. although this pd-conv will be unique for sure, i strongly hope, that possible future pd-convs will be in a similar manner.

Hi all, Thomas,
Thank you all for your feedback and participation, we had a great time and I miss having so much to see + learn everyday (and night).
I think there is a lot of merit in suggestions of using pd (or other open source tools) to facilitate the communications between us. We had some discussions on how to better use existing tools for online communication (documentation, workshops, etc). We can count on a very friendly network of individuals, user groups and centres that could support smaller initiatives. But the combination of performances, exhibitions and talks + all the exchanges that proceed from them make an actual large pd-convention difficult to replace in my view.
A couple questions I had relates to timing : how often and what is the best time of the year to hold a convention?
Conventions have a motivating effect and foster understanding and cohesion (one hopes). Three years is a long span and every year would be too taxing I believe.
It's difficult to accommodate everyone's schedules and we chose the end of August partly because we knew a number of people who teach or study could travel then. It also meant that a lot of the spaces we needed were available (thanks to the centres!). However, it could have been easier to involve students if the semester had started.
Finally, other nice recurring events like Piksel, Make Art, the Linux Audio Conference and the ICMC (sorry for the squeeze) etc. are to be worked around. It's all a little premature at this point but what are your thoughts on timing a convention?
A bientot,
Alexandre

It depends: remember that a year ago, some on the ctee assumed that it would be held at the end of september 2007, as a direct imitation of PdConvention2004, but then I got it changed to end of august because September in Austria does not have the same meaning as September in Canada: it's more like August in Canada in terms of university resources and availability of students.
I say this because it might be quite different in another city. I have not much info about São Paulo. If it's going to happen in about a year and a half from now, better do it after March, just in terms of rain... Maybe someone from São Paulo could inform us about university schedules.
Three years is a long span and every year would be too taxing I believe.
Taxing for participants or for organisers? If it were the same organisers every year, I agree, but it wouldn't be the same organisers every year. I'd say a year and a half because nothing has been done yet, but if the preparation for the 3rd convention had started a few months ago, then "every 12 months approx" would seem good.
However, it could have been easier to involve students if the semester had started.
Don't students need to go to school as well?... Or do you just take a week off your regular courses and draft your students in the convention and call it an assignment?
