Hi!,
when i open "counter-help.pd" file and i press [reset message i get this error:
"error: counter: no method for 'reset'"
why?

Because there's a namespace conflict with different [counter] objects in different libraries. Why every library needed their own [counter] with the same name but dif behavior, I have no idea.
Usually it is suggested to people that they build their own counters, instead of relying on the pre-built ones. It's a good exercise and not too hard, although the help example is lacking, in that it doesn't explain how to build your own "reset" into the counter, without which a counter is worthless, in my opinion.

Try making your own counters. See attached patch.

A lot of people that use Thunderbird sent attached patches "inline".
I'm not sure why. Might be a mime-type thing.
Anyways. In the email from Derek you see a lot of (maybe) wierd text
at the end of the email. All the line start with the # character.
Together they form the Pd patch. Copy those and past them into a text
editor (For example TextEdit or Notepad or what ever is at hand at
your system) and save it as plain text with the .pd extension. Then
runt it from Pd.
seems your client or provider or host did remove the attachment. i received it. anyway, if that happens you can still get the attachement from the pd-list archives.
save that with the ending 'pd': http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/attachments/20070410/d0d931a6/a...

This is a great little tutorial, but where is an elegant solution for an updown-type counter? I made one a few weeks ago, but it was a mess of spigots. I am curious if there is a more efficient (and readable) way to do this with an idiom.

Yeah, actually what I'm trying to do is a bit more complicated, involving a counter that has 3 modes: 0: min -> max, 1: max -> min, and 2: min -> max -> min -> max etc...
So I really just want to have the main functionality of the cyclone/counter, but with it actually working when I try to change the min value from 0 so that I can loop between min and max when min != 0. I'll try to cobble these suggestions into this, and I'll post what I have when it's done.

What's that? A counter that count from 0 to N to 0?

A quick way would be to use [select] to reset the direction by sending "1" or "-1" to the [+ 1]. See attached. [select] is a bit dangerous in counters, though, as you might never reach the select number if you directly set the counter with a float, or if you change the borders, but for quick up-down-counting it works.

You're correct about using [select], my messy version used moses with a bang after it in a similar way. Actually, I guess the most complex part of my patch WAS the integration of multiple counter modes. I'm still stuck w/ spigot mayhem...curses!
