Hello all,
I am an absolute beginner to pd. I've been lurking on this list for a month or so, hoping to learn something, but I'm finding that this list is very advanced for my level of knowledge. Could you all direct me to a list that handles more basic/newbie/etc. issues with pd? FWIW, I am a Linux user.
Thank you,
Josh
Hi Josh,
AFAIK, there is no other list than this one, at least concerning pd exclusively. But you are encouraged to ask simple questions here as well, don't be put off by other more advanced topics. But be also sure to browse the big bowl of documentation and workshop material available at http://puredata.info/docs/ and other sites (i am pretty sure you do know them already).
Happy to see you on this list,
regards
(or in an old pd-fashion: cheers)
Peter
Hello Josh,
I'm hardly a month's pd user and right now pd is already starting to make happier!
At first all these geekish graphics and the "aura" that programming languages have, made me feel a litle uncomfortable, but with the help of the current list, the guys I mean that participate in it (cheers guys), I started to feel very confortable searching pd.
What I first did was to install pd and open all the /doc/.pd files one by one (I don't understand most of them to be honest). Then I set an easy target. Once the target accomplished, I set another one more complicated.
Keeping track of what is said in the current list (even if I don't understand a s~~t) helped me (and is helping me, cause I'm a begginer) see what pd has to offer.
Regards,
Tasos

I do that too. I used to ignore subjects on here that I didn't understand, but lately I started opening those mails just to see, even if it's about something I don't use, and it gradually expands my concept of Pd. Besides, experts love answering newbie questions in general. It makes you feel... altruistic.

Ah, so that's the reason! ;)
During the Pd Summer School in London some people had a little pub talk about if it would be a good idea to split off a more newbie oriented list. In my opinion it's not such a good idea, though, for several reasons. One is: How to seperate newbie problems from expert problems? Some issues have very deep reasons, for example the message system of Pd (float-, symbol-, meta-messages etc.) generally gives newbies the same headaches as it gives more advanced users.
Then if we had a pure newbie list, would the experts actually read it, too? And if they do, they may be inclined to spread their expert knowledge there as well so that the list may not be too different from pd-list in the end. If they don't, then newbies would never learn from the experts, which is important as well.
A kind of thing in between may be the Pd forum~ at: http://puredata.hurleur.com/
Several of the subscribers to this list don't participate a lot on this forum because they don't like web-based forums, while others do regular posts there as well. But if you want to escape Matju, Hans and me, this would be the place to go. ;)

A lot of topics are discussed here that should be taken to the pd-dev list: things like what pd should become, and how to invent new externals... sometimes it starts with an innocent question on pd-list and there's just no urge to spread threads over two mailing-lists just to shield beginners from getting scared ;-)
A lot of topics are advanced but not in the way that is suitable for pd-dev; e.g. lots of math stuff.
The solution is to just delete the mails that you really don't understand, so that you don't waste time, and to try deciphering the mails that you sort of understand, so that you learn (unless the topic is really boring).

There would be the mailing-list of the Montréal users group, but then, it's sort of reserved for people who live in Montréal, around Montréal, and/or who speak French.

Some of us have been writing tutorials for absolute beginners, so
we'd love feedback on them from a real beginner. (after working with
Pd for many years, its hard to be a fake beginner ;). These
tutorials are included in the Pd-extended test package:
http://at.or.at/hans/pd/installers.html
Don't worry, even tho they are test versions, they are still easy to
install. Once you've downloaded and installed the package for your
platform, run Pd and go to the "Help" menu, then "Browser". In the
window that pops up, go to "manuals". There is where these tutorials
are. They are currently called:
Intro Sound Visual Networking

Welcome Josh, Don't be shy. It's all just boxes of numbers running on cleverly organised sand.

This list is also that place. A lot of n00b questions get answered here...when they get asked. But since it is a big community full of experienced users and developers, there is also a lot of advanced talk. I agree that at least half the stuff that goes on here belongs on the PD dev list.
My suggestions:
sound granulator, a monosynth, a VJ tool, etc) and start building. You'll figure out some questions pretty quick!
interested in:
http://lists.puredata.info/search/PD-list
and you'll probably have an answer in less than 24 hours. Sometimes less than 5 minutes! ;-)
which looks to be a bit less "programmer-oriented" here:
Good luck! d.
