In the changes.txt it says that indentation is four spaces? Does that mean that a click of the "tab" key is supposed to generate four consecutive spaces? I don't see any tab characters in the source (unless I'm searching them wrong.)

There aren't any tabs (so that it doesn't matter how you have set your tab spacing to look at the code).
The code uses 4-space indentation. (That shouldn't be affected by tab spacing).
