Hi list, I have problems instaling GEM, I hope somebody is willing to point me in the right direction. Here is what I did.
I installed Pd 0.48.1 with the terminal
*sudo apt-get install puredata*
That worked fine, I am on Xubuntu 18. Typing in terminal:
*lsb_release -a *
gives:
*No LSB modules are available.*
*Distributor ID: Ubuntu*
*Description: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS*
*Release: 18.04*
*Codename: bionic*
My processor info, typing in terminal:
*lscpu*
I get:
*Architecture: x86_64*
*CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit*
*Byte Order: Little Endian*
*CPU(s): 2*
*On-line CPU(s) list: 0,1*
*Thread(s) per core: 1*
*Core(s) per socket: 2*
*Socket(s): 1*
*NUMA node(s): 1*
*Vendor ID: AuthenticAMD*
*CPU family: 21*
*Model: 112*
*Model name: AMD A6-9225 RADEON R4, 5 COMPUTE CORES 2C+3G*
So I assume it is an AMD type.
Then I wanted to install the GEM graphical environment with dekken.
Typing *gem *in the dekken window gives many choices. To figure out which one to install I look for the processor type and OS type. So in my case I first tried with version 5.0, that did not work, here is the error:
*Commencing downloading of:*
*http://puredata.info/downloads/deken/releases/0.5.0/deken-plugin-v0.5.0--ext... http://puredata.info/downloads/deken/releases/0.5.0/deken-plugin-v0.5.0--externals.zip*
*Into /home/mick/Documents/Pd/externals...*
*Successfully unzipped deken-plugin-v0.5.0--externals.zip into /home/mick/Documents/Pd/externals.*
*Unable to add %s to search paths*
Then I exit the process and got these details in the error message:
*invalid command name ".externals_searchui.results"*
*invalid command name ".externals_searchui.results"*
*while executing*
*"$mytoplevelref.results delete 1.0 end"*
*(procedure "::deken::clearpost" line 3)*
*invoked from within*
*"::deken::clearpost"*
*(procedure "::deken::initiate_search" line 15)*
*invoked from within*
*"::deken::initiate_search .externals_searchui"*
*invoked from within*
*".externals_searchui.searchbit.button invoke"*
*("uplevel" body line 1)*
*invoked from within*
*"uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]"*
*(procedure "tk::ButtonUp" line 22)*
*invoked from within*
*"tk::ButtonUp .externals_searchui.searchbit.button"*
*(command bound to event)*
Then tried this version:
*deken-plugin/0.3.1 (Deken externals downloader - MINIMUM VERSION REQUIRED FOR NEW PACKAGES)*
and I got the same result. Then I tried:
*Gem-v0.0.extended-(Linux-i386-32)(Linux-amd64-64)-externals.tar.gz*
it did not give errors so I assumed it installed correctly but when I open the object gemwin it gives me lots of errors, like:
*gemglutwindow*
*... couldn't create*
*GLdefine GL_LINEAR*
*... couldn't create*
*GLdefine GL_EXP*
*... couldn't create*
…
After that, when I typed gem in dekken I get 3 other options, the one that I have “installed” (?) and two that were not there before.
*tofv0.2.2(Sources).dek*
What should I try next? Thanks for your patience and generosity. Mick

Thank you very much for your attention.
*sudo apt-get install gem*
Gives me:
*Reading package lists... Done*
*Building dependency tree *
*Reading state information... Done*
*gem is already the newest version (1:0.93.3-13).*
*0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.*
So I uninstalled gem with
*sudo apt-get remove gem*
and reinstalled it with
*sudo apt-get install gem*
it installed 6 new packages, but I cannot open gem objects in pd. I am looking for the directory of gem to put it in preferences>path but cannot find it. So I installed *locate* and found it is in
*/usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem/*
with capital G (why? isn’t its name “gem”?)
Anyway I added this path to pd preferences and when I create object |gemwin| it still gives me lots of errors for related objects.
Then I found this other directory (with “gem”, not capital letter)
*/usr/share/gem/*
added this to the preferences>path with no success. I finally was able to do it running:
*pd -lib Gem *
Thank you very much again for your support.

cool, so you already had it installed.

you do have to load Gem first. "pd -lib Gem"
the gem package also comes with a startup script "pd-gem" that does this for you.
*/usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem/*
with capital G (why? isn’t its name “gem”?)
no. the name is "Gem" (with a capital "G" and the rest lower-case).
Anyway I added this path to pd preferences and when I create object
the only reason why this works and didn't work before you added the path is, that the Pd you are running is not the one installed through apt-get (despite of what you claimed in your last mail). the Debian provided Pd (and thus the one provided by (X)Ubuntu), will find the Gem in it's path without further ado.
|gemwin| it still gives me lots of errors for related objects.
Then I found this other directory (with “gem”, not capital letter)
*/usr/share/gem/*

remove this from your preferences. the reasons why there's a /usr/share/gem directory are solely related to Debians idiosyncrcies with regard to architecture-independent data. the data itself is symlinked into /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem/, so everything is *in place*.
I finally was able to do it running:
*pd -lib Gem *
well, yea: that's the command to run (as explained above ;-)).
you could have also just read /usr/share/doc/gem/README.Debian ;-)

Thanks a lot Johannes. Ok Ii will take out the Gem directory from the preferences, inf¡ fact it did not work anyway :)
I am quite sure I installed Pd from terminal using
*sudo apt-get install puredata*
I might be mistaken.
Excuse me if I am bugging you and not reading the ReadMe. Now it is all fine, have a good day
