Hi everyone,
I'm working through the FLOSS manual on pd attempting to learn it. I've learned how to make a simple synth using osc~ and phasor~ objects, and I trigger them using a slider patched into an mtof object. Lots of fun, but the long tone of an oscillator is getting boring. I've scanned through other chapters, and I can't seem to find other ways of triggering audio.
For example, I've been watching this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zKzxqN5mUI
Whoever this is uses a sig~ object going through an expr~, etc. I don't understand what he's doing, but it looks cool. Can someone help me understand it? What are some other things I can play with?
Be gentle, I'm new to all of this. :)

Hi Josh, The [sig~] object seems to be used as a place holder in that video-- a way to say, "here are some initial values for [expr~], which can later be changed by using something else as the input." Have a look at the help patch for [expr~] for more info. Have you looked at the tutorials in doc/3.audio.examples? For example, see the "scratch machine" in B07.sampler.pd, and the attack detector in C07.envelope.follower.pd.

Hi Josh,
looks like you haven't gotten to the later AUDIO TUTORIALS chapters:
# ENVELOPE GENERATOR # AMPLIFIER # CONTROLLING THE SYNTH # STEP SEQUENCER # 4 STAGE SEQUENCER
where you learn about changing the sound of the synth (amplitude, frequency or filter) over time using envelopes, as well as how to control/trigger the synth from various input sources.
Good luck!!!! Derek

I'd recomend the help files on samplers. If you go to the help browser, 3.audio.examples then b07 onwards. These give you quite a simple way in to using existing audio on PD

ha, you caught me! :) you're right, I'm trying to skip ahead. I'm a very poor student for this reason!
thanks all for the useful replies - pd is a vast (and somewhat confusing) world, and I need all the help I can get.
Hey, that's how you learn, and you learn better if you chase parts of PD that interest you more. The first few parts of the help files talk about data structures etc... which confuse the hell out of me, don't use 'em, don't plan to. I'd say if something interests you, go for it, if you don't understand it take a step back. Whatever you do, don't spend too long listening to a pure sine tone.

if I can beg the forgiveness of the list and make another post:
I've been reading over the answers presented to me and realize that I completely failed at asking my question. let me give it another try, this time I'll tell you what I want to do in terms that make more sense to me:
first, I do not want to load samples or sound files of any kind (yet). this is where I messed up when I said "triggering audio."
let's say I have an osc~ object, and I want to turn it on and off in a rhythmic fashion, say every quarter note, as if I were playing quarter notes on my midi keyboard. what objects/methods do I need to learn about to do that? I'm guess I need to look in the control section, but all of the examples don't actually play anything, they are just examples. I really need to see *how* to use them (I have trouble "connecting the dots" as it were).
I have many more questions, but I'll stop there and digest whatever comes at me.
thank you again, and sorry for messing up the first time!
Maybe try the attached patch and look up the help for the objects in it to see what they can do.
Martin

Martin - thank you so much.
I also found this last night:

Which also has a LOT of beginner-level stuff that seems to be right up my alley.
