It hasn't happened to me on this build, but it sounds like the old bug
where the menus don't work until you open a window.

Hi Hans and the list. Great to see this effort to unify and simplify pd! I tried the windows version and it looks like a few libs are missing. Maybe I missed something but I don't see either gem or osc except in some help patches. I suppose they don't need to be specified in the startup list? (Sorry if the questions are simple -consider me a typical user rather than developer. I have been happy using the pd-extended37.0 for a couple of years.) I tried to load one of my applications (running in old extended) and it generated the reports listed below. Another detail is that the menu item "help/1 manual" results in no action - possibly some link pointing to the wrong place? /Anders

Hi all,
Following Anders, I must say I am very impressed by your work Hans. Pd-extended greatly facilitates access to Pd for people attending *workshops* for example. I found myself quite worry about explaining things people don't want to hear about (the over-complicated bundle stuff on macosx or event pd command-line options, etc.). Maintaining a boosted pd on the two proprietary platforms sounded quite difficult to me, but... :-) I have the same remaks as Anders concerning the windoz version (I am no developer neither). Even if it is not that difficult to install, a *Gem.dll *would be quite welcome. Other details include :

I am also a bit confused with *pdp* on windoz - what can we expect honestly?
(sevy probably has no idea about that ;-) ?
Otherwise I don't know how difficult it would be to include *readanysf*~, we talked about that several months ago on this very list but it seems to me that, still, nobody can provide a decent compiled version on windoz or osx. By the way, are you planning to release any add-ons on readanysf~, August?
I also would dream to have *pyext* included de-facto - but this sounds a bit out of range on windows even if Python.dll could as well be included after all. By the way, I got several examples of disappearing pyext boxes on windoz machines (it seems that Gem and pyext don't cohabitate that well).
Anyway, thanks again Hans, for this excellent contribution! best, vincent

Hi Vincent,
By the way, I got several examples of disappearing pyext boxes on windoz machines (it seems that Gem and pyext don't cohabitate that well).
i would be very interested in more detailed info how and why GEM and pyext don't cohabitate well. Vanishing object boxes have in all cases i got to know of been caused by version mismatches of PD or flext headers and libraries and have been resolved by downloading or checking out an up-to-date flext version and recompiling flext and the objects.
best greetings, Thomas
What i can remember is that when disabling Gem in Pd startup-preferences, pyext boxes would show up normally again. What detailed info would you like to have?
i'll have more infos on sunday, i'll try to reproduce it with care (i don't have time right now) - suddenly wondering if all this was all but a daymare, zzzzzzzzzz
As far as i can tell, this did not occur in linux or mac versions.
thanks Thomas for quick reply, best vincent

that would be very surprising for me....
What detailed info would you like to have?

flext version would be great as well, if you know it. Is pyext self-compiled or a binary from my site? it's under Windows, right?
thanks, Thomas

Yes! it did, thanks Thomas. (Please disregard the problem with Gem, apparently it was fake, i could not reproduce it with pyext2.0.)
By the way i am running into problems with the ._send() method of pyext. For example i would like to setup gemwin, to different configurations :
[pyx gemwin config] | [r gemwin] | [gemwin]
On windows, when i send:
._send('gemwin', 'create') i get no method for symbol
._send('gemwin', 'border', 0) i get the same message but it works on macosx...
._send('gemwin', 1) it works
sorry, i know sven already helped with that but i really get confused with this syntax and the terms symbol, list, float from Pd list, tuple, string, numbers of Python
Something else i am searching for is how do i exchange numarrays between pd and python.
Best, vincent

yes, this is not too easy, but i think it will be clear once it is understood. Let's look at the _outlet method first:
list message [list arg1 arg2 arg3 ....( 2) self._outlet(outletnr,tag,(arg1,arg2,arg3,....) will generate a tag message [tag arg1 arg2 arg3 ....(
the variation of 2)
self._outlet(outletnr,'list',(arg1,arg2,arg3,....)) is the same as 1)
When there's only one arg, like in self._outlet(outletnr,arg), this arg will be converted to a symbol or a float message dependent on it's type E.g. self._outlet(outlet,1) will give [float 1( which is the same as just [1( while self._outlet(outletnr,'hey') will give [symbol hey( which is _not_ the same as [hey( !
some examples:
._outlet(1,1,2,3) will send a message [list 1 2 3( ._outlet(1,1) will send a message [float 1( ._outlet(1,'a','b','c') will send a message [list a b c( ._outlet(1,'a') will send a message [symbol a( ._outlet(1,'message',(1,2) ) will send a message [message 1 2(
._outlet(1,'message',1) will send a message [list message 1( ._outlet(1,'message',(1,)) will send a message [message 1(
(element, )
the same applies for the _send method, except there's the receiver symbol replacing outletnr. Therefore,
._send('gemwin','create') will generate a [symbol create( message sent to [r gemwin] , which is not understood Instead you will want to use ._send('gemwin','create',()) instead which makes a [create( message
._send('gemwin','border',0) will generate [list border 0( You'd rather use ._send('gemwin','border',(0,)) The original version works on your OSX installation because you're obviously using an old pyext version there, which doesn't recognize the refined syntax
and lastly, ._send('gemwin',1) will generate [float 1( which is just ok.
Something else i am searching for is how do i exchange numarrays between pd and python.
You have two possibilites:
._send the array gets converted into a list of elements
to a PD buffer: see buffer-*.pd examples
best greetings, Thomas
thanks Thomas, the syntax of the pyext send method is way more clear to me now. the beta version (0.2.1pre) of pyext is better in that respect both for windows and mac. vincent

Sounds like a great reason for the Pd-extended builds. The idea is to
have everything compiled at once... Now if only I could get Pd to
compile using MinGW...

I'm still using pyext 0.2.1pre
but I've always used it with Gem and never had a problem, on linux and OSX. Thomas knows I've had other issues though.
gem CVS, 0.38-4 and pyext 0.2.1pre seem to work together fine...
I added pyext to Hans's installer for pixelTANGO and my binary works fine in there too...

Nothing for now, unless someone ports it to Windows. I think it should
be possible using MinGW and Quicktime, and maybe not even that hard
since MinGW provides a very Linux-like environment and Quicktime is
basically the same on Windows and Mac, AFAIK.
Otherwise I don't know how difficult it would be to include
readanysf~, we talked about that several months ago on this very list
but it seems to me that, still, nobody can provide a decent compiled
version on windoz or osx. By the way, are you planning to release any
add-ons on readanysf~, August?
I also would dream to have pyext included de-facto - but this sounds
a bit out of range on windows even if Python.dll could as well be
included after all. By the way, I got several examples of
disappearing pyext boxes on windoz machines (it seems that Gem and
pyext don't cohabitate that well).
If someone gives me a binary, I can throw it in for now. But it should
to be added to the pd-extended build system to guarantee that its in
future distros.
Anyway, thanks again Hans, for this excellent contribution!
Thanks for the sponsors for spurring this effort:

Great to see this effort to unify and simplify pd! I tried the windows version and it looks like a few libs are
missing. Maybe I missed something but I don't see either gem or osc
except in some help patches. I suppose they don't need to be
specified in the startup list? (Sorry if the questions are simple

using the pd-extended37.0 for a couple of years.) I tried to load one of my applications (running in old extended) and
it generated the reports listed below. Another detail is that the menu item "help/1 manual" results in no

This is the first test release, so there is sure to be lots of stuff
wrong. Now I know what. :)
Gem, OSC, unauthorized, and some other stuff are not yet in there. I
haven't gotten them compiling on Windows yet. But if I don't get them
compiling, I'll include the binaries. Do you happen to know which
library [switch] is from?
The help/1.manual thing is also on the TODO list. Thanks for the bug
report.
