Hello, I am doing a degree in Music Technology in England, and am trying to build a phase vocoder to change the pitch of a sample without affecting its length. I know this can be done in PD (its one of the examples), but I have to build it in Max/MSP... My professor reckons it can't be done as you can't change the fft window size in Max like you can in PD. Is this right? Can it be done another way?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Simon Adcock

You don't need to change the FFT window size to change the pitch or duration with a phase vocoder. The FFT window size only directly controls the analysis of the sound, not the sound generation (but the FFT window size does affect the sound quality). In other words, the pitch shifting is independent of the FFT window size in a phase vocoder.
I would be very surprised if you couldn't make a pitch shifting phase vocoder in Max/MSP, whether or not you can change the FFT window size, but I know offhand.

hi Simon,
my suggestion would be to read Tutorial 26 in http://www.synthesisters.com/download/MSP42.pdf
really, it is just one click away...

It is possible and one is included in the pd example files. Check out pd/doc/4.fft.examples/09.pvoc.pd
