Hi, I have toyed with this a few times, read the documentation a few times etc. I have tried some of the comand propmts to try and figure out if anything works but none of them were found. My soundcard outputs tones (with glitches) when I do the test. basically how do I make a basic patch on this, how do I know if it is working. Is there any website that lays it down for a beginner, other than Miller's site?
Thanks, Todd

I'm a beginner too (and I'm french, but not at IRCAM !).
Todd, about the problems with your soundcard, you should read the "3.1. how to get and install Pd" section of the documentation, and there is a useful Pure Data FAQ page at http://www.pure-data.org/
If you want to learn how to use Pd, you should open the patches in the pd/doc directory, "pd/doc/2.control examples/01.intro.pd" first. It's like a tutorial. Each example is numbered, they all have comments, try to edit them and change some parameters, and when you have understood the patch, open the next example. If you want more info about one object, right-click on it for help. All the help windows are themselves patches explaining the objects. You can find them in the pd/doc/5.reference directory.
I hope this will help you.

I think a mailing list for newbies would be a great thing to do.
Also the aim to put an html tutorial on the net is something i am waiting for since it was announced 1-2 years ago.
I stopped working with pd because it took me too much time to work into the basics. I think I am not the only person that doesnt work with pd because its too dificult to handle for beginners.
I would also support such a mailing-list/website

Hi all,
I often feel that I have to re-invent things in Pd that still have been done by other people.
After a course at university using Opcode MAX I started using Pd without really having an idea what Pd is capable to do (besides handling MIDI / audio). I sometime feel that there are people out there doing great things with Pd but the only things I (we?) get to know are the problems discussed here on the list.
I think it would be nice to have a place where people can 'publish' information (ore URLs) about projects they have worked on just to get an impression what is possible and what has been done so far. This might also be a helpfull resource for newbies to learn all the 'old tricks' necessary to use Pd...

Ok, I feel guilty now. I'll try to arrange for more spare time in the days to come.
For the person who wants to know more about how and what people are doing with pd: http://gige.xdv.org/pages/pd/pages/links lists some useful websites. Some of those people provide links to some of their projects so you can download them and play around. Wonk resource page is particularly interesting.

I don't know what this means. Do you mean you tried running pd with different command line arguments? Which are you trying to use?
My soundcard outputs tones (with glitches) when I do the test.
What computer are you using? What operating system? What sound card?

The "Pure Documentation" under the Help menu forms an excellent tutorial. I had never worked with MAX before I came to Pd and learned everything I needed from the Tutorial, the documentation, and this mailing list. Now I scare even NATO users.
