Hi all, until now I have been using a 32bit system, but 2 days ago I installed a brand new ubuntu '9.10' 64 bit. (And I want to keep it, this '9.10' 64 bit seems to me faster than '8.04' 32 bit)
As Pd-extended for x86_64 is not auto-builded, I have some questions about building a debian package :
all externals' ?
build @ home') to produce a beautiful .deb package for x86_64
extended, gui-rewrite) with differents versions on the same computer ?
Some informations about what I would like to do :
often only use Gem with few (5, 6) others externals...
included in the svn (I'm always in a learning process)
for me on 32bit
if the latests sources give me pd crashes (I do Audio/Video live shows and performance and stability are very important on scene...)
voila! any suggestion is welcome best regards, pierre

about building a debian package :
- is there a document describing the SVN directory structure ?
nothing clear for the svn itself, but its fairly self explanitory (most externals folders have their own readme/info)..
for the extended buildsystem look here: http://puredata.info/docs/developer/PdExtendedBuildSystem and http://puredata.info/docs/developer/Debian
- what are the differences between 'pd-extended' and 'pd-vanilla loading
all externals' ?
pd-extended is a patched version of pd, so it has some minor differences in operation - the externals should not be drastically effected regardless of the build target. some more low level ones maybe (toxy / iemguts)
- what is the simpliest way to build pd-extended (a kind of 'nightly
build @ home') to produce a beautiful .deb package for x86_64
you can reproduce the autobuild fairly easily without too much hastle.
- what is the simpliest way to build pd-'extended'-gui-rewrite for x86_64
x86_64 will not be any different to x86, and the gui-rewrite uses autotools, so it will work this out for you.
- is there a simple way to have and manage differents pd (vanilla,
extended, gui-rewrite) with differents versions on the same computer ?
just compile without installing.. and launch pd from the command line using ./pd or something similar, for something more sophisticated choose a different install target for each build and build a script that chooses version at /usr/bin/pd
Some informations about what I would like to do :
- in fact I think I dont really need the whole pd-extended thing as I
often only use Gem with few (5, 6) others externals...
extended is mostly overkill if you know what you are wanting, and if you only use a handful of extra objects then maintain by hand.. it will take a lot of the pain out of the process.
- but it can be very nice to try and be able to use ANY of the external
included in the svn (I'm always in a learning process)
it is nice, but if you need them, and need them badly you will find them and install them. otherwise you could attempt to use some extended binaries with a 32bit chroot account, then you can 'try before you buy'!
- I would like to use the latest sources, nightly build was just fine
for me on 32bit
better anyhow, the latest stable candidate of extended is not designed for 64bit and needs to be heavily patched.
- but I also need to have a method to build a stable pd-extended release
if the latests sources give me pd crashes (I do Audio/Video live shows
and performance and stability are very important on scene...)
if you seriously want reliability then make a 32bit partition and install 32bit ubuntu 9.0 (or better still try an older more tested version of ubuntu) besides a lot of array based objects that have not been thoroughly ported to 64bit, 64bit pd is not propperly tested and needs a bit more time and attention. for performance stability stick with the tried and tested approach.
voila! any suggestion is welcome best regards, pierre
good luck.. if you seriously want to build for ubuntu 9.0 x86_64, be prepared for a bit of frustration.. heres some extra reading - albeit out of date:

Hi dmotd, many thanks for yours explanations !
- is there a simple way to have and manage differents pd (vanilla,
extended, gui-rewrite) with differents versions on the same computer ?
just compile without installing.. and launch pd from the command line using ./pd or something similar,
ok
I'll do that, don't install, and run ./pd from src directory because :
for something more sophisticated choose a different install target for each build and build a script that chooses version at /usr/bin/pd
I think configuring '--prefix=' at each compilation will be too confusing for me.
- I would like to use the latest sources, nightly build was just fine
for me on 32bit
better anyhow, the latest stable candidate of extended is not designed for 64bit and needs to be heavily patched.
ok , a bit sad but I'll continue to try to compile and use the 64bit build
- but I also need to have a method to build a stable pd-extended release

ok Until now I always used nightly-build or pd-extended release on 32bit, and I can easily come back to this solution : I have an other 32bit debian lenny on the same laptop, but I would prefer to use the same OS for test/create and performance...
good luck.. if you seriously want to build for ubuntu 9.0 x86_64, be prepared for a bit of frustration.. heres some extra reading - albeit out of date:
http://puredata.info/docs/developer/BuildingPdExtended64bitUbuntuIntrepid http://puredata.info/docs/developer/64BitLinux
ok
I'll retry using theses instructions I read on this page that :
Download the source package for Pd-Vanilla 0.42.4, extract it, and use it to replace the Pd core source in the Pd-0.40.3-extended folder. I did this as the 0.41 pd-extended core does not (as yet) have the 64 bit table bug resolved (tables are only read half way). Hopefully in the near future this step will not be necessary.
I'll try this method and try with the pd's svn source as well
thanks for your time and links !! It is a bit more understandable for me :)

Hi all,
I'm new in this community. I helped a little bit to organize the PDCon 09 in São Paulo, and Iḿ getting more involved with Pd since.
This is just to say that I've installed 64bit Ubuntu two months ago, because I have a 64 Turion Acer notebook.
Nothing worked properly, so I've changed to 32bit version and everything seems fine up to now. But the 64 version is very unstable, and for my personal experience I really do not recommend...

what do you mean by "nothing" that worked properly? what did you change to 32bit? ubuntu? Pd-extended? Pd?
because i have been using Pd on Debian/amd64 for years and have not encountered so many problems that i would say "nothing worked properly".

Hi IOhannes,
Maybe Iḿ too new in this so, I I haven't been able to find the solutions at that time, but I could not make my wireless connection work, and PD extended also was not working, and my memorie is that I've lost precious time during the conference re-installing it to 32 bit and making it work.
Probably if I was more experienced it would have worked out better. However, as un-experienced as I may be, when I installed the 32bit version everything is working fine -- Iḿ mostly working on Ubuntu in all my activities, including Pd.

First setup your machine with the packages you need:
http://puredata.info/docs/developer/Debian
Then do this:
svn co https://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/pure-data/branches/pd-extended...
cd 0.41/packages/linux_make make install make package
Then you'll have a .deb to install. Also, search puredata.info for "64 bit", there are some specific wiki pages about that topic.
Ok If i see that 0.42.5 is not stable enought to do a live show I'll return to 0.41 But for now I'll continue testing my patches with 0.42.5
thx all, for your work !

if there are issues relating to running parts of that script we'd like to hear about at the archlinux aur, you might need to subscribe but its painless..
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22509
if something seems wrong with the builder itself then post to hans and this list..
if you are having problems with an external try contacting the author and cc this list, and the same goes for pd itself (which also has a bugtracker too)
and for anything where you want some kind of instant response then irc works well, and there are often a few folks there that work on areas above..

Yes ! and I can tell, for now, the performances seems very good ! I mean, really better than on my old system ! I've just tested with a patch I'm writing for an art installation (a kind of realtime and ajustable timelapse) and I had previously some lags (pd-extended nightly-build on hardy heron 32bit), lags which have disappeared now ! All image are saved and played back nicely without any lags. Great !
So, I must test more in depth but my first impression is very good :)

Hey El Jay,
The best thing to do would be to break up your makefiles into patches
using either 'diff -uw' or 'svn diff' and submit them to the patch
tracker. They should be organized by library, since different people
maintain different libraries.

andrás, the 'script' is an archlinux PKGBUILD, distributed in the arch-user-repository. its simply a set of build instructions used by the arch-build-system to assemble a package which can then be installed with the archlinux packager 'pacman'. all this is similar to *bsd ports or gentoo ebuilds and every linux distribution has its own helper instructions for packaging - this ones just for archlinux.
