Hi all,
I just tried Pd 0.50-2 on my automatically updated mac under macos 11.0 big sur. And it doesn't work. Pd console open fine but then a new patcher looks like a transparent rectangle : https://ibb.co/rfz2dxW
There is no warning nor error on the terminal or in Pd's console. I tried the binary downloaded from puredata.info and also built it myself without more success.
Has anyone already updated to Bigsur and successfully run Pd ?
Cheers
Antoine
Hi Antoine -
Can you see if 0.51-0 works any better on it? I'm trying to avoid buying a new Mac as long as I can but if we get to the point that I can't make builds that run on the newest MACOS I'll be forced to.
thanks Miller

Hi Miller,
0.51-0 ? How could I have missed it ? but this is the same as with 0.50-2 : patcher window is not rendered but Pd Console does.
I also tried to install XQuartz and run Pd from its terminal. No more success unfortunately.
Don't hesitate to ask me if I can help doing more tests. And please, avoid buying a Mac...
Cheers
Antoine

Hi again -
I managed to get remote access to a MACOS 11 machine -- it identifies itself as "Version 11.0 Beta (20A4300b)" - and I'm seeing Pd windows rendered the same way I'm used to on a Mac.
I notice on your screenshot you have loads of stuff added on - can you try it with all your preferences forgotten?
thanks Miller

Hi Miller,
when I start Pd with -noprefs option, I have the same result: Pd's console window is rendered correctly but all other windows (including Settings and Browser) are fully transparent. Enabling 'Transparency Reduction' in Accessibility Settings doesn't help.
kind regards

Well, I did notice that there's still an included tcl/tk in MACOS (at least in the one I have access to). So here's an interesting possible workaround: try going into the Pd app and overwriting this file:
Pd-0.51-0-ppc.app/Contents/MacOS/Pd
(which is actually a copy of "Wish" from tcl/tk) with this one:
System/Volumes/Data/System/Library/Frameworks/Tk.framework/Versions/8.5/Resources/Wish.app/Contents/MacOS/Wish
(Perhaps the path isn't the same on your system, or perhaps this file belongs to something that isn't installed over there, etc...)
Please let us know how it goes..

With the system Wish there is a little improvement : the setting dialogs are displayed almost correctly (in dark mode, some text is white over light gray background, which is hard to read) and the patcher windows now have a title bar but they are still transparent.
cheers

depending on your kind of "remote access", this might well take a completely different rasterizer. things like transparent windows are usually just some GPU effect (like rotating cubes for switching desktops, wobbly windows,... thanks goodness these abominations have retreated), and i doubt whether they would be included in a remote session.

anyhow, have you tried to explicitely assign some background colour to the canvas? add a "-background white" to the canvas-creation at [1].
just a random, uninformed idea.
