yeh...you can run linux in macos, or macos in linux, with maconlinux. or you can run gentoo on macos, as well (if you just want it for the source / app management and stick with apples kernel and OS..)

Or you install Linux in paralell to OS-X. Why not try Ubuntu, www.ubuntu.com ? It's very slick, easy to install, and you can use the great Pd packages for Debian on it.
Using bittorrent you can download it in 30min on standard DSL: http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.10/ either the "live" version which doesn't install anything to disk, but runs from CD, or the "install" CD which will do a real install.

well ubuntu is just a user-friendly debian so you will have the same troubles with externals as on normal debian-

And the same troubles with user-friendlyness than any other distro. Ubuntu is often described as a "better" (read "slightly broken") Debian distro with edgy features and newer everything, wrapped in a politically correct Benetton type packaging. Ubuntu is to Debian what Mandriva is to RedHat. -- Marc
I read:

yes - for some odd reason I'd recommend debian http://www.us.debian.org/releases/stable/powerpc/
and what would be the implications of that
hmmm you would have linux on mac hardware ;)
(could it coexist with osx, etc? I have panther...
absolutely - and as carmen pointed out - apart from dual-booting you can even run one os in a virtual machine (like mol -> http://maconlinux.org/) within the other.
to install however you'll need to repartition your hd (or use a 2nd drive) to do this non-destructively you'll need some tool that won't come with your debian install image. (like hmmm what's the name again iPartition ?)

parted can resize hfs+ partitions. i recently did exactly this on an
external firewire harddrive using a linux/ppc livecd (don't remember
which. likely this was ubuntu or gentoo)

Thank you for answer so quick, but i think i did bad the question....
What can Linux offer to a MacOS user and how can i install it in my hd external drive safelly?
How can i then start on Linux? Should i be scared about viruses?
Thanks again

hi josue
i think you should post your question to a linux/ppc list like debian-
powerpc or perhaps one in your mother language because you will
likely need more specific help than we can provide here.
some starting hints:
powerpc than on pc. especially wlan and powermanagement in some
powerbooks is not working. if you just want to run pd try one of the
osx packages from miller, hans or james. if you just want to play
with linux and see if you like it just try a live cd.
very user/beginner friendly (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/). there is
the ppc only yellow dog linux distribution. i did not tried it until
yet. (http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/)

Well,
i have mac OS 10.3.9 in a PowerBook G4 60GigasŽ HD, i have also an external HD with partitions:
50G for MacOS, 25 for MacOS, 25 for Windows, 20 for windows and i did 10(or maybe 20) for Linux but i can work on that space casue i havent got Linux.
Can i instal in that partition Linux? Why is interesting to do that? Im very beginer about this things and i want to can do that easily...with a good tutorial also would be good.
I will love to try Linux but i dont want to have any risk with my documents or my MacOS system,
Thank you all

I have Ubuntu and Tiger on my Powerbook. I wouldn't recommend it
though. I did it because I was using Linux for several years before I
got the powerbook so a lot of my current stuff was done for linux.
Also, there are a few things I can do in Linux that the Mac either
doesn't do or doesn't do as well. However, I have been unable to get
any audio in Linux, the trackpad doesn't work and Airport Extreme
doesn't work. Adding packages is a bitch because ppc packages aren't
as widely available as x86. So I would say, if you're not an
experienced Linux user who's gotten used to working with features
that Linux supports but Mac doesn't, don't bother with Linux on a
Mac. If you seriously want to become a Linux user, get an x86 computer.
