Hi all!
I m running into a problem right that has to do with cpu consumption, but not with GUI. In my live guitar processing patch i use the core of Miller's Phase Vocoder patch for time-stretching. It records bits of what i play and time-stretches them. Now my problem is that it freaks out at times, the sound gets dirty like audio drop-outs, and this is correlated with higher cpu consumption. The thing is that I made my patch as carrefully as i could, that is with minimal GUI and no bangs blinking all the time, and switch~ objects to cut the audio within all the subpatches that are not in use at a certain moment in time. Also, my time-stretching subpatch works fine most of the time, in effect i can use it for two hours in a row without drop-outs. Yet sometimes it just freaks out.
So i was wondering, could this be my Fedora desktop that's messing things up? I have Fedora 12, rt kernel, with the standard desktop (which i guess is GNOME?). Would it make sense to try another desktop, like Xfce?
I read in a post somewhere that Miller uses a specific desktop which is very light and ideal for work audio work, but i can't find it now. Any advice welcome!

are you sure that your CPU frequency did not change? i sometime have this problem : the CPU slowdown to save some power, introducing audio problem. i simply put it full speed every-time i use CPU intensive applications. i don't know how to do this on fedora, but it should be possible.

if you use gnome, you can ad on the panel a CPU frequency applet that alow control over cpu frequency. i'm sure kde have the same kind of stuff.
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep MHz give the curent cpu frequency c

To check:
$ for CPU in 0 1 ; do cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu${CPU}/cpufreq/scaling_governor ; done
To change:
$ sudo su -
# for CPU in 0 1 ; do echo performance
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu${CPU}/cpufreq/scaling_governor ; done
# for CPU in 0 1 ; do echo ondemand
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu${CPU}/cpufreq/scaling_governor ; done
(set to 'performance' when you need it, set back to 'ondemand' when you need to save power/battery/etc)
(Tested on Ubuntu-flavoured Linux)
Another thing to be aware of is thermal throttling - if it gets really too hot then it may slow down to save from melting, in which case the system logs will tell you (try dmesg | tail, etc). Solution here is cleaning fans/heatsinks, usually.

It's worse when the CPU slows down for another reason, such as to prevent it from going too hot. Then you can actually accelerate your CPU by cleaning your fan. That's what I did with my laptop recently and it solved that problem for me. It's a good idea to disable the power-saving feature, but it's a bad idea to disable the temperature-protection. Instead, solve the temperature problem by lowering the temperature...

What's the matter with line~ in a subpatch where audio has been switched off? I think i have line~ in most of my subpatches and i have never noticed anything wrong.
Can it be harmful to let the cpu run at full speed all the time? Or is it just a matter of energy consumption?

It's not particularly harmful, but your cpu may run hotter and consume more power. You can disable the cpu throttling and thermal protection features in the bios usually. That's what I do with my overclocked core2 duo desktop machine. The performance gets bad at above 60C and you'll be in danger of damage. I've stress tested this one and haven't broken it yet.
