Hi,
I've been asked to do the tech side of an art installation for a couple of my friends. They have a Motu828 firewire multi audio-out card running on OSX. Midi in will be a USB midiman breakout box (connected to control-voltage-to-midi converter connected to light sensors). Judging by posts in the last couple of days, I should be able to get the motu going with Pd 0.36 and port audio april version. Not so sure about the midi - has anyone used usb midiman box with Pd on OSX? I seem to remember reading that port audio midi on OSX is buggy. Video - has anyone compiled/run GEM currently on OSX? I need to play some avi/mpg/mov files in time with these midi/CV triggers too. Just thought I'd check on the list before I start kludging things together myself. What do you think my chances are of getting midi in, motu multi-audio out, and video without touching any sourcecode?
Thanks for your comments!
Kind Regards,
Chris. _________________________________ chris@mccormick.cx http://www.mccormick.cx http://www.hypercube.com.au http://www.sciencegirlrecords.com
hi,
i'm not sure about the multi-channel audio, but you should have no problem with midi or video. i'm using both on OSX right now for performance and installation work. GEM is great with PD 0.36, but not with 0.37. you'll only be able to play quicktime files though, no avi's.
so go ahead and kludge.

Hi Matt,
Thanks a lot for the reply. So you are using a moto828 and you know for a fact that the multi-audio out doesn't work? If not, I'll probably have a crack at it anyway.
Chris.

No inputs will shows in pd though. Only outputs.

I have had no problem with all the midi interface I have used so far (3), but finding the right port is a bit tricky.
Good Luck Alex

GEM for OSX is part of the CVS and you can find a binary here: http://taproot.dyndns.org/~cgc/downloads/index.html
The G4 version has a fair amount of Altivec code in it so definitely use that if you are using a G4. I will be posting an update to this version very soon, perhaps as early as today, so check the page for updates.
I need to play some avi/mpg/mov files in time with these midi/CV triggers too.
GEM for OSX uses Quicktime to open and play files so just about anything that the Quicktime player plays GEM will do the same. The exception is MPEG-1 clips which don't work and the QT documentation is wrong concerning the correct playback method - maybe this will get sorted out at some point.
You can always report bugs to this list and we will do our best to fix them for you.
