quick linux questions;
im getting error messages in the terminal that say;
OSS: could not set sampling rate for this device OSS; ioctl on output device failed
then , an error in the pd log that says;
error: OSS: SNDCTL_DSP_CHANNELS failed /dev/dsp
as far as i have read...i need to install a module called snd-pcm1-oss
but i don't have that on my system.
can someone tell me how to install this module...or if there is a workaround. i haven't configured pd to work with jack yet, so if i use jack is that going to make things easier?
do you have any sound coming out of say xmms? what is your soundcard?

i think that simplest would be to use alsa (start pd with "-alsa"). jack is more complicated as you need another application (the jack daemon) to run before pd, and it doesn't really offer anything that alsa does not offer. (which could start another flamewar) jack certainly has its merits but for getting audio going i would start with alsa. jack only builds on top of alsa.

ok...no sound coming out of anywhere, cd player won't play my disks or anything....
aaargh, i knew moving to linux would be easy.
can someone recommend a good linux users forum or mailing list so i can get this all sorted out? (i have ubuntu)
btw...just for interest sake , my soundcard is a tascam 122, which does seem pretty hard to configure with linux, but i think it's almost there cos i get lights and terminal recoginises it.
thanks guys. sorry for being the resident wally.

Always use aplay and arecord for testing first. These two are the reference tools. If they don't work, something is seriously screwed with the basic setup and you may want to head over to the alsa-user list to find out the reason.
A very good resource to all things ALSA is the ALSA-wiki: http://alsa.opensrc.org/ and of course the Soundcard Matrix: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/
For your card, also read: http://langerland.de/linux/usx2y/install.html
A more general mailing list is linux-audio-user http://music.columbia.edu/mailman/listinfo/linux-audio-user
And of course your welcome to use pd-ot@iem.at for any further questions, that OS-X and Windows user don't care to know about.
