For some reason I can't find a pd_lua package for this system... can get it on pd-extended, but not for the straight pd.
What to do?

there is a Debian package "pd-lua", available in Ubuntu since utopic.
else, use deken.

Um, "Use deken"? More details?

Um, how about typing "pd deken" in any Internet search engine (first result => "pure-data/deken - GitHub") for a start ??
Yes, yes. I downloaded a .tcl file (in text) into my downloads directory, read the instructions saying I should put this into a directory in my "~/pd-externals" folder.
Since I don't seem to have a 'pd-externals' directory on either of my computers I'm not sure what to make of that.
Um, am I guessing wrong about that '~' at the beginning? -- Is there a specific path that that's referring to?
on unix system, ~ often refer to the home directory. Which is on Ubuntu at /home/username
If you don't have a pd-externals folder in your home directory, just create it and put deken.tcl file into it, then restart Pd.

no problem. the deken README should not assume that anybody has those directories (nor that anybody knows what "~" means), so it's a communication problem on our side.
