I have tried to find a solution for this problem with the author, but his
www server and email address have been down for at least a week, I thought someone here might be able to offer advice.
I'm compiling GEM for pd in RedHat linux 6.1. I've got all the dependant
libraries installed for GEM except for gltt. Redhat does not appear to have an RPM for gltt.
When compiling gltt-2.5 I get the following error:
checking for FreeType... configure: error: FreeType (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation.
I have the freetype headers in '/usr/local/include/freetype/'
I have the freetype library in '/usr/local/lib/' (libttf.so.2.2.0)
Perhaps the use of /usr/local dir is unique to RedHat?
How do I convince gltt to find freetype when using ./configure?
I think that it should be possible with the "--with-ttf-includes" and
"--with-ttf-libraries" arguments, but I am having trouble using them.
The README says that I should modify the FREETYPE variable in the Makefile,
but I didn't find such a variable, so I suspect that instruction may be out of date.

As I recall, getting Gem running in RedHat 6.1 was quite hard. I appear to have had to download freetype-1.2.tar.gz in addition to gltt (and a bunch of other stuff too; and I had to massage some paths too I think. It's much much easier in RedHat 6.2; it would probably be less trouble to upgrade to 6.2 than to deal with getting Gem running under 6.1.
Note the security problem in 6.2 -- you should upgrade the FTP server to wu-ftpd-2.6.0-14.6x.i386.rp available on the RH website.
