somehow i think that when you say "external", you really mean "subpatch" or possibly "abstraction".
Ya, your proabably right. I am not really fimilar with the vocabulary I guess. Thanks!
I did some tests with switch~ and indeed you are right. It would be useless to have such an object that can only be turned off in retrospect.
Still no word on gop on and off via an object? What about a global message like the dsp message?
$0-object gop off
Hurrah for PD! -thewade

No GOP on/off sitch is available. If you hide your GOPs in a subpatch, they don't really affect performance anymore, so you might want to do that. However moving around lots of objects (GOP or not) will always be a critical operation in current Pd.

well, there is ...
|pd sandbox|
|;pd-sandbox donecanvasdialog 0 0 0( <- switches gop off
|;pd-sandbox donecanvasdialog 0 0 1( <- switches gop on
(it's a hack... don't expect that it's going to work if the subpatch is opened .... booom)
cheer ... tim

Ah, interesting, I didn't know that. However I don't really see a big use for this. Sqitching off GOP will leave an ugly big white hole in your patch. Hiding GOPs in subpatches, which you can open as needed using "vis $1" messages or the mouse, results in the same performance "gain".
For some RRADical patches I provice two versions of biger GOP patches, one with the full GUI and another normally named "*-ng" with no gui visible, unless you open the abstraction. Inside there just is an instrance of the GOP abstraction with connected in/outlets. This actually is quite useful, as often I just need the screen space, whereas I need the GUI much less often.
