Hello group.
I'm making my way through some of the documentation. It seems pretty awesome. I am interested in microtonal, and I'm starting to conceive of a step-sequencer for my tunings.
But as of now, I would be content to find a few patches that are fairly musical. All of the patches I've tried from the documentation are good instruction, but just repeating ugly sounds over and over and over while you change parameters. Is there a repository of synth patches somewhere, or something?
Thanks. Chuckk
There are a number of synths included in the docs under
3.audio.examples. http://em411.org has some patches, and there have
been many posted to this list that you could find in the archives
(http://puredata.org/community/lists ).
We are working on starting a 'made with Pd' section to highlight
projects made with Pd also.

Thanks, Hans. I already have plans for Pd, though I can't get any good sounds yet. All of the synths I try from that menu just feed a note over and over while I change pitches and options. I can't play anything. The site you mentioned "cannot be displayed". I'll check out the archives. Also, my audio output is terrible. Constant clicks, static.
I'll see what I can do with it.

Tom Erbe recently posted some really very cool patches by some of his students: http://music.ucsd.edu/~tre
I also may point out the RRADical patches by me available in the pure-data.sf.net CVS, but they need a whole bunch of externals (mainly Cyclone, zexy, and OSC).

Thanks for the links. I've hunted down some of the Windows problems mentioned in the documentation. The chopping and crackling is mostly gone. I am playing with the Arp from that page, and I'm coming to the conclusion that Pd just isn't for Windows XP. Csound real-time gives me some of the same problems, which I've never seen before. I have 2 Ghz, 512M RAM, but maybe I'd need more. I did manage to straighten out the help examples by raising my latency, but that Arp still cuts in and out. It plays all the notes, but sometimes they're softer. I thought maybe it was some sort of portamento, but if it is I can't control it. I'll give it a little more attention but I'm not digging the results yet.

At least not for Pd and not to fix your latency problems. Latency cannot be fixed with more RAM. If nothing else helps I'd recommend: www.agnula.org
I still run Pd on my 900MHz Althlon and 256MB without any problems and with low(ish) latency using Linux. I'd like to upgrade my CPU, but I cannot really convince yet myself that it is necessary.

This Agnula is for Linux? Can't use it. The CSoundAV manual mentions that, oddly, some faster computers end up slower than slower ones, but the machines he mentions are dwarfed by mine, and I get useless noise. Trying to make that and/or Pd work is keeping me from getting my compositions done, so I guess I'll have to come back to them.

No, Agnula *is* a version of Linux. I was half-suggesting leaving XP behind and running Pd on Linux. But that wasn't really meant to be a serious solution to your problem.

Ah, ok. I might just do that. When I first got into microtonal, Windows was the only platform I had that would allow me to create my own soundfonts for MIDI, so I could use dozens of pitches without pitch bend messages (took hours to set up, loop points and all). All of the Macs at school have external soundbanks, which are different in every room and usually only tune to the cent. With more non-soundfont non-pb apps, I have a little more freedom. I'm hearing all around about Linux now. I did manage to ferret out all of my problems with CsoundAV , so after work I'll see if the same things will apply to Pd. Thanks. -Chuckk
