No, not exactly... I can't get PD to set any MIDI IN device. Nor will it allow me multiple MIDI OUT devices for some reason. Okay, undoing the MIDI revolution sounds all right but for now outputting MIDI (probably into Audiomulch) would be the easiest way to get prebuilt sounds since there are not a bunch of prebuilt synths etc. for PD. I want to use PD to do logical processing and create aleatoric rhythms and melodies.
I know there are flags that can be set on start up, but from the binary installation I don't have access to change the start up (I don't see any batch file), and I need to keep this installation because it has all the libraries with it.
If I can't solve this I'll unfortunately have to use commercial software...

well, even if that were the case, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. pc final scratch pro only works on linux too, right? ;)
[midiin] is the raw midi interface.
you do have notein/noteout & ctlin/ctlout on windows as well as a host of other midi-related objects that work just fine.

Hello,
Using pd-38 or newer you can set startup flags in the "preferences" menu under "startup" there is a feild for "startup" where you just specify any flags you want. Though for MIDI I imagine all the audio settings do is set this flags anyhow.
I've not followed the thread but hope this helps.

I'm confused... my PD does not have a preferences menu?!
Do I have some broken/obsolete version? It was the only version I could find that was Windows binary including some of the libraries.

he may be referring to the "startup" setting -- to pass switches at startup.
blech,
v 0.38 has a gui for preferences.
I think HC has not updated the installer for v38 (0.37 is probably what it is).
You are looking for something that says "startup" in the pull-down menus. If you don't have it you probably have the older version.

What would be wonderful is an app that is: pd + reaktor
Couldn't you use OSC?
Of course there is no audio, but you could write a simple I/O external to pipe it into Pd.

IIRC, you can write your own batch file. Since you can start PD from a DOS prompt (provided you are in the same directory as the binary), you should be able to just author a batch file.
From http://puredata.info/docs/faq/FrontPage#WhatDoIUseOnWindows
"For Windows, .bat file is generally used in the place of a .pdrc. You use the same command line options as the .pdrc file, except you start the file with pd.exe and all of the options needs to be on that same line. Therefore the file will only be one line, though its often a very long line. Example:
"c:\pd\bin\pd.exe" -font 10 -path "c:\pd\doc\vasp" -lib cyclone -lib iem_t3_lib -lib iem_mp3 -lib mjLib -lib OSC -lib percolate -lib vasp -lib xeq -lib xsample -lib zexy -lib iemlib1 -lib iemlib2 -listdev %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
For now, to test it, all you need is the executable path, like "c:\pd\bin\pd.exe", then -listdev %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9 , so you can see what devices PD can see, and then look at the options here
http://puredata.info/docs/faq/FrontPage#WhatArePdsCommandLineOptions
MIDI configuration flags: -midiindev ... -- midi in device list; e.g., "1,3" for first and third -midioutdev ... -- midi out device list, same format -mididev ... -- specify -midioutdev and -midiindev together -nomidiin -- suppress MIDI input -nomidiout -- suppress MIDI output -nomidi -- suppress MIDI input and output
Good luck

This is what I'm trying to explain - the build I'm using does NOT start from a DOS prompt. It's an .EXE file and after I start it I see it running some kind of batch file. All the flags that would normally be put in a batch file are already built in somewhere and started by the .EXE. And since the build I'm using starts a bunch of libraries with externals, I don't have to deal with the nightmare of getting all of those to work (though some small number may be broken anyway).
If I start with my own batch file then I fear may lose access to all
these libraries as I'm not sure how to start/use them on their own.
Does this make sense to anyone???

See here for start flags:
http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/Pd_documentation/x3.htm#s4
To use: start up pd, and select File>>Startup
You can place startup flags in the textbox at the bottom. Then restart.

you can find the-very-handy-pd-startup-batch-file from t. musil inside the iem-lib windows-package: http://pd.iem.at/iemlib/iemlib_R1.15_win.zip named pd36_start.bat.
(if you want to have control over loading your libs)
