I also got a mail with an *.exe. attachment from the email adress: marius.schebella_a_t_netcabo.pt
At first i wondered why i should get a direct mail from the pd list when i subscribed just for the digest...so this is a virus (bugbear?).

all of these viruses tend to fake from addresses using other emails in the addressbook of the infected person. possibly also from emails appearing in any messages in their inbox. so you are likely to get faked virus emails from everyone who has recently posted on the pd-list, if someone else on the pd list gets a virus.
so, the upshot of this is that replying to a virus email with "you have a virus" is generally useless and only adds to the annoyance caused.
the only thing you can do is to make blanket requests such as, "if you are going to use outlook, please don't open attachments. p.s. rats learn faster than this"
but, maybe i'm just in a bad mood ;)

Thankfully I have never contracted a virus through my Outlook but it does worry me that is it likely to happen sooner or later, so as a windows user can anyone say what is best option? How about Eudora? Is that any better? And before the linux people jump in and say, "Install Linux", for me this is not an option!

Maybe not one that you know about. Those sub-seven trojans can be pretty elusive fellows. Some teenager in Denmark is probably reading this "over your shoulder" right now. :D

When I'm on Windows (20 h/week) I use Mozilla Mail.

Eudora and Netscape/Mozilla mail are still vulnerable to viruses, but much much less so than Outlook. Yes, even linux is vulnerable to viruses, but they are exceedingly rare (they do exist though).

I just think its a bit strange that both viruses that i have gotten have been from the pd list I am not sure if it's that i simple read or open all the mail from the list or what but my school account has caught all recent viruses. The wierd thing is that i got a recent trojan on my windows box from Downloading Python 22.

sorry, to hear this. actually we do have a virus-scanner running on our mail-server which considerably slowed down email-traffic because it did scan all the outgoing-pd- mails (it now only scans the incoming mails), but of course viruses might be sooner here than updates of the scanner.

Hmm, as an aside - the more people that are convinced about installing linux the more linux becomes a target for exploits. There is a price to pay for becoming popular.
Anyway, It's not really about Outlook it's about getting a decent up-to-date Virus protection.

Popularity is a non-issue with free software, it's a side-effect, and there's enough diversity in the Gnu/Linux world to offer resistance.
Anyway, It's not really about Outlook it's about getting a decent up-to-date Virus protection.
It's about liberty, which comes with responsabilities. Viruses spreads easily with proprietary softwares. A decent solution is to use free software, not anti-whatever softwares. The logic of industrial war is inneficient because the causes remains and the problems are amplified. Besides, virus protection companies needs viruses to stay in business...

Something being a side-effect doesn't make it immune to the laws of causality. Side-effects can have consequences too, and virus-writers don't care whether popularity was a goal or not: the more a piece of software is popular, the more it's an attractive target.
and there's enough diversity in the Gnu/Linux world to offer resistance.
Well, even in diversified niches, you usually have three (or even just two) major players which together are used in well over 50% of installations. You can bet that webbrowsers "Konqueror", "Mozilla", "Netscape4" together have over 95% of the niche; for webservers, "Apache" alone is most probably well over 80%; for mail clients, I don't know, but "KMail", "Evolution" and "Pine" must be a big percentage together.

Many of your quotes are real good but you had to stumble upon the most quoted (and thus, the most misquoted) quote of the whole internet.
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little
temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
-- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759
which has a different meaning.
Browsing the internet you can find it attributed to Jefferson (a contemporary) and Montesquieu as well (who was one of their sources of inspiration at least). It's difficult to really tell the truth about a quote that popular.

RedHat, Debian, Suse and Mandrake? The advantage of using Gnu/Linux is that even among the same distributions there enough diversity and versions to almost discourage virus writers. Anyway, this is probably the longest OT thread in the history of this list...

I'd expect linux viruses to _not_ depend on libc.so nor any other library, and whenever a program only uses the kernel interface (or is linked statically), its portability is severely increased. It only has to be compatible with the kernel, and in the case of GNU/Linux, the Linux kernel has quite a bit of a monopoly in the kernel business. ;-)
