Hi,
Is there a repository for Linux with last version of PD Vanilla (.deb,
Kubuntu 20.04)?
Or a precompiled package?
Ubuntu only has 0.50. I have big trouble (again) getting externals working...
thank you!

No there isn't anything beyond what is packaged for debian and trickles down into Ubuntu. What you do is to compile the sources. Please give it a try, it's easier than you'd might expect. Follow up here if you have problems.

Is this trouble related to Pd being only version 0.50 rather than 0.51?

Just for reference, on a Debian stable (bullseye) system you would make sure the following line is in your apt sources.list deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports main contrib non-free update the package cache and search for available pd versions, eg $ apt list -a puredata which on my system yields puredata/bullseye-backports,bullseye-backports,now 0.52.1-1~bpo11+1 all [installed] puredata/stable,stable 0.51.4-1 all puredata/oldstable,oldstable 0.49.0-3 all and install it using either $ apt install puredata/bullseye-backports or $ apt install puredata=0.52.1-1~bpo11+1 (untested)

Thank you guys for the answers!
After PD-ext died I always experienced issues with externals: I never
know if it's better to install them through Deken or by packages, and
then if I have to load them on startup or within the patches with
[import] or another obect. I re-use a very old patch and I'm trying to
fix that. On some objects it works removing prefix
[libName/objectName], and some I have to add it. Some externals (e.g.
HCS) doesn't work because they can't load other externals.
Compilation: I know a bit about compiling, but the point is: will it
work then with the externals as distro packages already installed? Can
I install against current version or do I have to uninstall everything?

Deken is there because of the lack of a system wide package manager on Windows and Mac OS. As a general rule, on Linux, try the package manager first, then Deken if you can't find it there.
then if I have to load them on startup or within the patches with [import] or another obect. I re-use a very old patch and I'm trying to fix that. instead of [import] use [declare]. [declare -lib] for libraries with one binary containing all objects [declare -path] for libraries where every object is a separate file

Yes

You can use what you have, no need to uninstall.
Sounds like you have problems on how the libraries are set to Pd path or are called.
if you do [libName/objectName] you are telling Pd the "dir" of the object in its creation. This lets you avoid loading it to path in Pd preferences. So either save the paths in Pd preferences and avoid the [nameoflibrary/object] and just use object. If the library is not loaded on start up and you want to avoid the libname, then you can also use [declare] to load path and objects correctly in each patch.
if this is a problem with large patches, remember that you can open the file as a text and modify with search and replace quickly in any texteditor like nano, gedit or such.
I have been using vanilla ever since extended died and have run into no problems. just deciding how to code, deciding between these 3 ways of loading and calling objects.
my 2 cents

Hi all,
I remember [declare] having the advantage that it will load the required external library before creating any other object. It might not reliably work when creating an object that is called like the library, I think there the order of object creation can matter.
As Max pointed out, using the operating system package manager rather than Deken has the advantage of easy updates, but it might take these packages longer to become available.
These days I end up copying all external libraries into my patch folder for easier archival and migration to other machines at the expense of having to update them manually should I ever have to.
