just to conclude:
today i installed pd from the intrepid repos and this is working
beautifully.
(thanks or the tip, frank...)
gem (also from the repo) segfaults immediately
audio has to go the oss route for (more or less) working without
crackles.
seems that the eeepc901 has still some way to go. but after all, it
wasn´t mant for that either :-)
thanks to everybody hans www.hans-w-koch.net
hello patrice,
thanks fo the tips, i will try them later. (for the moment i am having difficulties installing tk..)
unfortunaltely staying with hardy is no option. i am trying to get this set up on an eeepc 901. the intrepid kernel (from www.array.org) has wifi working better. but then, also this pulseaudio-thing has its own flaws... sigh
if i don?t get it working, at least i?ll learn a good deal about linux ?s underwear on the way.

hello,
the patch I've provided is a workaround, we still haven't found how to fix this issue.
For having pd on intrepid with pd-extended features, I've compiled pd from miller's site (with ./configure --enable-jack --enable-alsa, or just have a look at ./configure --help), I did use tck-tk 8.5 so the interface is neat, downloaded last pd-extended debian package, extracted docs and extra into /usr/local/lib (you will need a bunch of dependances, but in the .deb package you have a list, in control, just take a look...), applied workaround for MIME settings (take a look into pd-list archive for that),
now I've got pd-extended with all doc all externals and icons, but
<out of subject> the intrepid kernel has a serious bug, there is a conflict between nvidia driver and hda-intel drivers from alsa,
my advice is about just staying in LTS if the computer works good... </out of subject>

Marius also worked on setting it up, and helped a little bit with maintenance. But maintenance has basically all been me. There isn't much maintenance to do, the problems were caused by the host breaking and then upgrading their webserver.

sorry about the confusion, but my answer was rather sarcastic about the use of 0.9 vs 0.90; while a trailing 0 after the period can safely be omitted when dealing with "real numbers", there is a meaning assigned to it when it comes to version-numbers (which are more like strings).
"0.9" would be inbetween "0.8" and "0.10" (sic!), whereas "0.90" is between "0.89" and "0.91".
this probably becomes even clearer when dealing with version "0.91.1"

A nice trick with Debian based distributions to install build dependencies is this:
$ apt-get build-dep gem or $ aptitude build-dep gem
This will install everything that is needed to build the Gem included in Debian (0.90). But 0.91 has some additional dependencies, for which you should check the README as IOhannes suggested.
