Hi all,
The playback of video samples (photo-jpg/320 x 240) via pix_film in Gem does give me a stuttering result. It looks like the frame rate (25 ps) is not stable when [auto $1] is connected to pix_film. I tried to adjust the frame rate of gemwin (everything from 15 till 40), but this doesn't fix it.
However, when I use a manual counter (metro 40) which is connected to the right inlet of pix_film, the video plays smoothly. But, when I try to loop the sample, it hangs on the last frame.
Did anyone else have this problem and found ways to fix it?
Thanks a lot,
Sara

you could try it like this (see attached patch)

Hi Max,
Thanks for the patch. Something similar I made myself - except for the [abs] object which I never used before - , but the playback still stutters. Especially in loop-mode - moving from the last frame to the first frame (or vice versa) just takes too long.
To answer Chris' questions: OSX = 3.9 / Powerbook G4 / 1,25mh / 2 G ram PD version: 37.1 and 38.4 extended
thanks, Sara

i have got a similar setup and the patch runs and loops smoothly here. is it the clip you want to load? which GEM?

Hi Max,
I'm using GEM: ver: 0.90 release; it happens with all the clips I load. The stuttering gets extra visible when there's camera movement in the clip (quicktime/photojpg).

Are you using Quicktime 6.5 or 7?
I just booted my Powerbook back into 10.3 and tested with 6.5 and some 720x480 clips and they were smooth. Under 10.4 and Quicktime 7 I see some stuttering in both GEM and the Quicktime player app. I'll look into it further.
Hey Chris,
QuickTime Version 7.0.4 is the one I use. In the quicktime player the clips play smoothly though.

After booting back into 10.4 for more testing, all of my 720x480 DV and photo-jpeg clips now play smoothly using QT 7. There must have been something running in the background that I didn't see before.
You can try giving pix_texture a 'client_storage 1' message and see if that helps.
Hey Chris,
You can try giving pix_texture a 'client_storage 1' message and see if that helps.
I tried this, but it doesn't improve the situation. The funny thing is that if I play it with [auto $1] the loop function works smoothly, but the playback stutters. If I make my own manual counter, the playback works smoothly, but making a loop gives me a freeze in the last/first frame.
Thanks a lot, Sara
Hi all,
I've tried several things in Gem:
Those things don't make the situation better. Which means, the playback works smoothly, but when making a loop it still gives me a freezing last frame.
When I try to work with pdp_qt, I get a weird 'off color' problem. It looks like there is a second layer on top of the normal sample is 2 cm. off center of the image. The qt file is using pdp_qt: using colormodel YUV420P , but I was wondering if I could send another message to pdp-qt (like colorspace RGB) to see if I can get the colors right.
Thanks a lot,
Sara

...since you've tried these things and they don't help, I'm inclined
to believe there's something special about this clip: is it an
edited clip from a longer sequence? I ask this because it could be
that the last frame is somehow doubled/repeated, but there may be a
loop point which quicktime player sees and obeys, but gem simply
ignores...

...my experience with pdp_qt has been spotty on osx, mainly being a
matter of finding a codec that actually gets recognized
correctly...it's been awhile since I really played with it, but I
seem to remember either cinepak or sorenson consistently doing pretty
well...?

It's not one clip, all clips [quicktime/photo-jpg codec] don't play properly. As I wrote before, Gem is able to play the 'loop' while in [auto $1 (lft inlet of pix_film] mode, but its playback stutters. Using the left inlet of pix_film gives me a smooth playback but a stuttering last frame.

It has been a while for me too. But I believe that the codec quicktime/photojpg was recommended.

...hmm: all I can say is that I don't see anything like this with my
clips, so I've uploaded a copy of the latest gem cvs compile to my
website, maybe that'll work?

...unfortunately not all compressor programs make the same kind of
file: it's very easy to think you're compressing as one thing, only
to have it be another...I've been bitten with this, and in practice
have found I just need to keep fiddling with parameters in order to
find something that works as expected in [pdp_qt]...

I tried to load both Gem.pd_darwin (Gem.pd_darwin_3_8_2006.tgz and Gem.pd_darwin_11_16_2005.tgz) in Pd version 0.37.1 but they won't load. I don't think it's a permission issue, since I cannot even load them as root.
tried /usr/local/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_darwin and succeeded /usr/local/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_darwin: couldn't load Gem: can't load library
But, I succeeded in loading the new Gem into RC8 and it seems to work ok. And.. when exporting the clips (from another program than FCP) into QT/photojpg the loop plays ok. Somehow the compression of the file into photojpg QT by FCP works differently; Quicktime can handle to loop the files, PD cannot.
Thanks again, Sara
What OS, GEM version and hardware are you using?
