could someone tell me how i can turn off this paranoid setting in pd that asks me every time if i'm sure i want to close the patch window. it seems a little crazy that this happens regardless of whether i have saved the patch or not.
i hope i'm not being intolerant.
thanks.
CTL + W is very close to CTL + E, so I for one am glad it's there.

why not use Ctrl-Shift-w to close, and Ctrl-Shift-q?
this is kind of "turning off paranoia on-demand", and i think it is a
quite good solution.

I find this one a very friendly and useful paranoia.
accidentally close the main patch.. DISASTROUS! :-)
the main pd window at the pre-0.40 times (ok.. not so many times.. :-P but still)
alabala
thats fine, i guess if everyone is happy with it, i'll get used to it.
cheers

- Think in a live situation, you want to close a sub patch but you
accidentally close the main patch.. DISASTROUS! :-)
- I can't remember how many times I lost my work by accidentally closing
the main pd window at the pre-0.40 times (ok.. not so many times.. :-P but still)

P.S.: The lawyer in my brain insisted on me posting the following comment:
"My being funny is absolutely 100% well- intended"
no, I am not happy with it, either. would it be possible to make this an option in the pd-settings. pd-extended doesn't have this behaviour, at least not the old versions. have not tested the latest. marius.

i would be interested to know what keeps you from using the Ctrl-Shift versions of the shortcuts if you don't want the "annoying" dialogs.
for me it seems, like asking for an extra option is asking for something you already have.

let me ask the other way? why has pd to behave different than every other program on my computer? marius.

Yes, I also don't understand this ... Although there might be a workaround, newbies (and even me as not so new newbie) don't know this and are only irritated.

That feature also drives me nuts. I think it could be useful, but it
should be something that is a preference that can be controlled by
messages. That way you can turn it on only when you are performing,
for example. Then it would be useful.

nothing is bad about using shift. but the question is, how pd should behave if your are NOT using shift, but click on the small X in the pd console window title bar (or a patch) that usually closes a patch or program without confirmation. (unless you haven't changed the document.) new users may want to close the console window not realizing that this closes pd itself. speaking for me, I find this confirmation really annoying. do I really find this annoying every single time! YES! marius.

gotcha. i kind of forgot about the opportunity to close a patch/pd by clicking on [X].

HAHA... marius.. i love it, wenn du lospolterst.. ;-)
i agree, that a check, if a patch was changed would be nice. OTOH, wouldn't that be a good reason to switch to using shortcuts? i mean, how can you get annoyed so much by something, that makes closing a window - let's call it - inefficient, if you at the same time chose the most inefficient way to close a window anyway?

sorry, usually I try to be diplomatic and pragmatic.

you are right, but. using not only pd but also max, which tricks my brain all the time and 3 different operating systems makes keyboard shortcuts hard to get automated. also, ctr, command are always slightly different on laptop keyboards and "normal" keyboards. I think, I am getting old :( marius.

I never remember that it is an option. No other app does that. I
don't want to have to think about basic key commands, they should
just work. NeXTSTEP (which Mac OS X is, basically) is really good
about consistent key commands throughout every app, I've been using
NeXTSTEP since '94. Once you get use to using less brain power to
use your computer, so you can use your brain for more interesting
things, it's hard to go back.

Here's the nub of it. Performance vs programming. As someone else who does both I can agree the feature is a massive annoyance (whichever way it is set in the wrong context)
This really does need to be an option set from the GUI

because if it was the same as any other program, one of them would be
redundant :-)
