Hi,
from the ongoing discussion about Max/MSP compatibility I wonder if
it would be a good idea to create a list of available objects in the
extended version, quite as it exists for vanilla. For someone who is
getting acquainted - like me - it sure would be a useful thing, I
mean like '5.referemce/help-intro.pd'. Does anybody work on such a
thing?
Jurgen
Hi Jurgen,
this list has been described as a "moving target" here before. It changes quite frequently, and part of the Extended strategy is that the whole distribution is automatically generated from SVN, so unless there was a function somewhere to add the contents of a library to a list it would be very hard to maintain. The next best thing is to look through 5.reference at the libs available.
If anyone wants to help update a manual list of the Extended objects, you can add to the Pd FLOSS Manual:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/PureData/ListofObjects
The Pdpedia was also a good resource for this, however it's been offline for more than a year I think.

Derek,
I understand that and as pd is still evolving there is nothing wrong
or strange about the 'moving target' tag - I'm not even complaining.
My thought is, there must be someone who decides to include or not to
include a specific external / abstraction in a specific extended
version. For the users it would then be an 'easy thing' to identify
if an external is available in that release or not. I also have the
impression that there are in fact in number of libraries that are
constantly included in the extended version and that evolve little or
slower than the extended releases. -- Anyway, just a thought.
And thanks for the link to floss manuals, very useful.
Best Jurgen

Actually, the way I understand it is that there isn't someone who decides whether something is included. It's an automatic build system, so anything that gets submitted to the SVN can be included automatically. So it would be an extra step for each and every lib author to manually include it in this list, and for some authors, making understandable help patches is already a challenge enough!!! ;-) So without an automatic system in place, it is up to each author/maintainer.

It was down for far too long, 5 months I think, but it's back now.
You can see all of the object classes here:

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of
exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an
idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps
it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into
the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess
himself of it. - Thomas Jefferson
You should look at
http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/2008-10/065799.html. The xls
file I put there is probably obsolete by now, but it's the most complete
there is - afaik. Maybe some day I make a patch to do this automatically,
but that might not come so soon.

João,
thanks a lot - I read your message when you posted it but I didn't
check the attachment. On the other hand, your message underscores the
need of such a document, generated automatically or composed by
someone good willing. Tell me if I'm wrong. - For the time being, I'm
already quite happy with what I have thanks to the support here.

I was thinking of getting this file complete for one version of pd-ext,
and then after that to be checked by a script. but since I can't really do
python or anything, and don't have the time to work more on this for now,
this file is stopped for the time being.
but yes, a script to make it actual would be necessary. I already had the
work of going through the whole contents of /extra and
listing/categorizing them. this file is quite useful for me as it is,
anyway.

The attached script might serve as a starting point for something. It will list all externals under a given 'extra' directory, and optionally print all the comments from the corresponding help file if there is one.
It could easily be adapted to output in csv format, or print the library a given external is part of.
One caveat: it assumes that your extra directory has only one level of nesting, so it only looks in extra/ and extra/* not extra/*/* etc.
