hey.
My experiences with Linux were just too difficult and have discouraged me
too easy to say...things just take their time...
However I'd be very happy if that Pure:Dyne CD gets released and I could have an instant operating system ready for PD and audio...
i encourage you to try demudi http://demudi.agnula.org/ (i love to say that). if you've got a god machine, "PD and audio" on demudi really pull some teeth. (love to say that too)
Or if PDP gets ported to Win
why ?
well that would make me very happy too
arent you happy now?
best regards daniel .

Funny, cause I was just thinking tonight about doing a switch to Demudi and/or Fedora+Planet Ccrma. I thus actually have a few questions, cause I began comparing the two "distribs" (but didn't went to the end actually ;) ) and what I figured out is that Demudi clearly has more software (in number) and also more developping tools apparently (all the lib*** stuff) but there actually is some software in Ccrma that is not in Demudi. Stop me if I am wrong ... So, my question would be, is it possible to add the lacking soft from Ccrma to Demudi and if not (because Ccrma relies on Redhat/Fedora), is it possible with Remudi ? But is Remudi still alive (cause I didn't find any link on Agnula - but I must admit I didn't search really long ...) ?
Thx for replying to this 10 in 1 question ;)

IŽve been seduced by PDŽs free and open source nature. But I canŽt help it... Leaving monney aside, are there any advantages in PD in contrast with Max/MSP?
IŽve heard that PD runs slower than max on the same MAC. I guess it is true depending what you are doing (intuitively).
btw, in PCs, does PD run way better on linuks?
Please be nice and donŽt get angry.

Leaving money aside, PD's advantage is that it's open.

It runs on many different kinds of hardware...IPaq, XBox, Ipod, IRIX/SGI, older PCs & Macs, embedded processors (someday?)...
It runs on older hardware under Linux which would just get bogged down by the latest bloated OSX/XP/etc operating systems.
It is open and free, meaning you don't have to make silly "stand alones" to share your work with others. (Although I will admit that the ability to make VST/AU/etc plugins would be a great benefit... see several earlier threads on this topic.)

There's big problems with the GUI under OSX, it's true. I can't run any of my PD Linux performance patches under OSX on the same Powerbook without totally losing control of the mouse, keyboard etc.
btw, in PCs, does PD run way better on linuks?
Incredible difference, due to the fact that most of the PD development is done on Linux, and the fact that Linux is (usually) much more stripped down and "clean" than OSX or windows, which allows a lot more resources for PD to use.

Pd also runs as a web browser plugin, graphical data structures, and
namespacing (tho somewhat rudamentary).
You can write Pd objects in C, C++, python, ruby, C#, and guile.
The documentation for Pd is lacking in parts, but you can learn a lot
from the Max docs.

i don't know what the max/msp community is like , but the knowledge and atmosphere of this mailing list is one of the best things about PD for me. it's very cool.

can be a little bit tensed at times, but i definetely agree with you ;-) vincent
ps: even though i don't know much about the max/msp mailing list. should we really talk about communities?

I'll second that! I've only been using PD and graphical programming for about 2 months to build an installation for my final year college project [kinda jumping in at the deep end I guess!] But I've had nothing but help and kindness from useful people on this list!

When users approached me regarding the fluid~ external, the Max users generally asked: "Do you know where I can get a binary of fluid~?" while Pd users asked: "I compiled [fluid~] and it crashes. Can you help me?" I suppose, a "Do It Yourself" attitude is more common among Pd users. But then, Pd users don't have much choice but to rely on DIY. If you prefer a finished product, choose Max, if you don't fear getting your hands dirty, Pd may be for you.

After years of using text-based SuperCollider to teach el. music to
undergraduate music students, I've just begun using Pd for that same
purpose. I'm looking to gather idea about Pd/SC confluences,
differences, similarities - perspectives, user experience/opinion in
particular, to share with students exploring a music/sound/art/
multimedia programming environment.

Hey,
I "heard" that Gem runs much better that jitter on the same hardware, so who knows...
Yes the OSX gui is a little slow, just due to a fairly bad port originally, that has been created improved by Jamie Tittle from this list.
My fav advantage to PD over Max is the scriptable nature, being able to start it as a -nogui process (no patch is visible but the patch runs in memory). Pd plays better with other software, when you use MAX, you tend to use max and not other stuff withit at the same time. (from what I see anyhow)
I think max still crashes often, and short of a few notable exceptions in the max world many PD patches run for years in installations, and some without rebooting. I think my biggest uptime was something like 200 days without a reboot or crash.
I used to use MAx/Nato_055 and softVNS, but now I just use PD... But then I prefer the aesthetic of Gem to that if softVNS/Nato and there was no jitter at the time, and I'm glad to have never been interested in it. ;)

Would you be opposed to a ReactOS port?
It does happen to be completely Windows compatible, but its a truly
free operating system.
