hello list,
I am trying to use writesf~ to record 24/96 sound files but it seems that any bit depth other than 16 is causing distortion. I'm using pd 0.38-3 from Miller's site on a powerbook with os 10.2, and I'm using audacity for playing back the files. In addition I have the same distortion when loading a perfectly fine 24 bit file into an array.
Hi Alexandre,
Which OS and which file format are you using? I'm unsure about the 24-bit format in general, and would be happy to try to test this on my rig.
cheers Miller

24 bit has never worked in pd on my mac g4 , os 10.3...all i get is really loud static
but as i've said before, my ears are only 16bit anyway...so it's not big deal for me.

I'm using Mac os 10.2, I've tried using .aiff and .wave. Could this be a hardware issue? I have had this problem on a m-audio delta 44, and the powerbooks onboard soundcard.

Thanks, I have attached my patch.

Well, I didn't try your patch (not sure but it looked like I'd have to sample something and I didn't have audio) but I did try writing a 3-byte, 1-channel wave file to disk using writesf~ and looked at it in peak (no audacity on the Mac I squat on) and it looked OK. Values above 1 or below -1 clip, as usual (some people have suggested that 24-bit files should be normalized to 16 instead of one, i.e., 4 bits of "headroom", but Pd and peak seem to agree that [-1,1] is the nominal range).
So unless it's an overflow at the input of writesf~ I'm stumped.

OK... well, I don't seem to have this problem on my linux machine... will have to try it on a macintosh next time I get in the vicinity of one (maybe Monday...)
