a first pre-release of the 94th generation of Gem is available via deken (and github, and git.iem.at).
on macOS, there's currently only a 64bit available (32bit builds (and hopefully ppc-builds as well) should be made available with/before the proper final release) also, i'm a bit confused about the usability of the windows builds. (the current builds are done with MSYS2/MinGW on a Win10 host. it seems that cross-compiling gives more usable results).

hi, list
first tests of the new 0.94 Gem (thank you IOhannes for all your pre-xmas efforts !):
this is on windows 7/64bit, PD 0.49-0
==========================================================================
32bit version (both PD and Gem):
produces an error window on startup (see attachment): "the procedure entry point pthread_cond_timedwait_relative_np could not be located in the dynamic link library libwinpthread_1.dll"
and an error message in the pd console:
C:\PD_TEST\pd-0.49-0_32\extra\Gem\Gem.dll: couldn't load
==========================================================================
i had more luck with the 64 bit version (both PD and Gem):
GEM: Graphics Environment for Multimedia GEM: ver: 0.94.git v0.94_pre1 GEM: compiled on Dec 21 2018 GEM: maintained by IOhannes m zmoelnig GEM: Authors : Mark Danks (original version) GEM: Chris Clepper GEM: Cyrille Henry GEM: IOhannes m zmoelnig GEM: with help by Guenter Geiger, Daniel Heckenberg, James Tittle, Hans-Christoph Steiner, et al. GEM: found a bug? miss a feature? please report it: GEM: homepage https://gem.iem.at/ GEM: bug-tracker https://bugs.gem.iem.at/ GEM: mailing-list https://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/gem-dev/ GEM: compiled for MMX/SSE2 architecture GEM: using SSE2 optimization GEM: detected 4 CPUs GEM: image loading support: SGI GEM: image saving support: SGI
Movies seem to load ok, even though i had (non-reproducable) crashes when switching files.
but the image support (as the pd console also states) is limited to SGI, so only *.rgb files would open. but even then, they would appear upside-down !
==========================================================================
best

Hello! That's a wonderful news, thank you for this!
I've tried to load Gem on Pd 0.49-1 on macOS 10.11.16 (El Capitan) but I'm getting an error while trying to create a window:
[gemmacoswindow]: failed to init GLEW: your system only supports openGL-1.0 [gemmacoswindow]: unable to switch to current window (do you have one?), cannot render!
I suppose it has to do with my system version... Am I right? Is there a way to run it without updating my OS?
thanks again, josé

if you are on Debian (unstable ("sid") or testing ("buster")) or Ubuntu/"cosmic", you can just do $ sudo apt-get install gem
(you can run the above on any version of Debian or derivatives, but on the mentioned releases, you will get gem-0.94)
gfmadsr IOhannes
in Cosmic I see 1.0.93.3-16build1
I had a locally compiled version, so I did "sudo make uninstall" there. (searching for uninstall in the readme yields no results, that was a guess, but it did something)
Launching Pd tells me GEM: ver: 0.93.3 GEM: compiled on 2018/08/10 at 23:12:12 UTC
turns out there still was a Gem folder in /usr/lib/pd/extra, so I deleted that.
after this Gem was gone, so reinstalled it from the repository (using synaptic)
Again: GEM: ver: 0.93.3 GEM: compiled on 2018/08/10 at 23:12:12 UTC

ouch, sorry. i really meant to say "disco".
No problem. What's the recommended way to get this version on cosmic?
build it yourself.
you could follow the generic instructions from [1] to manually build Debian packages for another distribution (replace the dsc URL with the one found on [2]). this is mainly good for getting all the dependencies used to build the official package.
for the actual source code, i'd recommend to use a git-clone as long as things are still moving.

Back to one of my original question regarding the gemwindow and the physical screen resolution on Mac OS 10.14 is there a workaround to exceed the screen size and render a bigger gemwindow? We are quite close to have a working NDI server from pd to any NDI network, therefore it is essential to have a bigger gemwindow than your computer monitor, and send it through the network to a client which than handles the rest of the screens. i still don't really understand your use-case. why would you need a window that is bigger than you desktop (assuming you really mean "desktop size" when you talk about "monitor size"; think multi-monitor setup).
can't you use [gemframebuffer] for off-screen rendering of any size you like (and your gfx-card supports)?

Iohannes,
thank you very much for the Christmas present, I hope this is already a time for bug reports:)
Is it a god place to start or you prefer Gem-devlist.
Just not to keep you in a foggy situation I send you couple of my list of the detected bugs for the beginning.
I am on Mac OS X Mojave or whatever it is called, Gem 0.94 64bit.
resolution I add the biggest will be the dimension of the screen itself. Maybe it depends on Glew. 3. AVF backennd for pix_video launches built-in facetime camera but only white rectangle is visible on the screen, no image is rendered. External USB device is not recognised.
So far no more.
Best,
Popesz

which is not that bad (at least, better than never on top) :-) which window-backend are you using? (open the gemdefaultwindow.pd abstraction to see which [gem*window] object is being used.
you can also change the default windowing backend to e.g. [gemglfw3window] or [gemmacoswindow] or whatever gem*window.pd_darwin you find in the Gem folder, and see whether this does soemthing different.
- cannot create bigger Gemwin than size of the screen. Whatever

i don't think that glew is to blame. probably glut (if this is the backend you are using). what yre you trying to achieve?

yes, this has been reported as https://github.com/umlaeute/Gem/issues/200 i' be most interested, whether the same happens on older osx versions as well (el-capitan,...)

Answers below according to original numbers of the bugs:
and an other 64bit High Sierra but Pd does not launch, it says cannot read file "5400" and some probelm with Tlc, probably not installed properly
