Okay, well if I ever have $200 extra and anybody is smart enough to partition my hard drive and get Linux dual-booting on my laptop, recompile the kernel for audio, and get all the software I need working -- I'd pay someone to do it.
Because I've never been able to figure it out... :-)

for what do you need $200 ?
partition my hard drive and get Linux dual-booting on my laptop, recompile the kernel for audio, and get all the software I need working -- I'd pay someone to do it.
nowadays you don't have to recompile kernels as newbie ... everyone can install linux in 15 minutes or so ...
Because I've never been able to figure it out... :-)
try ubuntu, kanotix, kubuntu or whatever ... it's really easy !

I'm sorry, but - some of you Linux people really don't understand the beginner viewpoint. Linux is not that easy, and some people like me JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND IT! I've tried, 15 minutes to install, no way; more like, 5, or 15 hours, than give up in frustration. And googling, when you don't know exactly what your looking for, sometimes just causes more problem/frustration.
The $200, is to pay someone who knows what they are doing, to install it, and teach me so I understand what's going on.
Also, my audio card doesn't support Linux, so I'd have to buy a new audio. Which means even if I figure it out myself, Linux is not a "FREE" option for me (built in soundcard just won't cut it for the kinds of stuff I do).
But, I still want a Mac, because there some nice stuff for it that is Mac-only software.

Plan for the future. Next time you buy hardware, make sure it supports Linux. This means that you'll have one reason less to stick with Windows. Learn to see multi-platform hardware as more valuable.

Well, try to download e.g. the installer cd from http://kanotix.com ... You cannot tell me that you don't manage to install this when you are able to use a program like pd ...

Yes, I can get Live CD's to run (Demudi Live) - but note that I need to dual boot and partition my hard drive correctly, and that was where I got stuck.
Additionally, I couldn't get my wireless working, and without the wireless, I can't get on the net, to look up Google and figure out what's wrong!!!
Also, I couldn't figure out how to access files on my hard drive, through Linux - will Linux even read my Windoze partitioned drives?
The dual-boot is a necessity, I have a lot of important music and other files that I've made with windows software that I really can't give up on. But I'd prefer, at least, to browse the web, and run PD and such, on Linux. Even without audio, if GEM was as stable as people say, it would have some interest for me, when I run live visuals (but can I get the output out of my laptop easy in Linux?)... I'm on a Toshiba Satellite, btw. I think it would be easier, if I had a desktop, but my old one doesn't really work it always freezes (regardless of operating system, must be hard drive or motherboard).

then boot with a live-cd and then use qtparted (i guess Demudi is not the first choice for beginners ? - don't know) there you can resize partitions ... but that's no linux related knowledge and if you want to use computers you will maybe have to spend some time on how to make such things ... ;)

hi list i have 2 questions: i made a patch that makes an fade between 2 videos with gem, using alpha and colorRGB it works fine with avi files, but doesnt work with mov files, why is this? is this a codec issue? if so, which codec of mov files supports alpha with gem? in using pd 0.38.4 with osx...
my second question is: im creating videos with after effects, and theres a compression option that allows you to make alpha channels (for example making a video with holes, that allows you to see the image that is in the background ..... that option is: depth : million of colors + is it posible to see the videos with transparency in gem? thanx .... bye

I guess it's more complicated than making "holes" in the movie. I haven't tried yet, but it might be possible to use [pix_mask] and [pix_multiply] for having this kind of effect?

Answer to question 1: send a "colorspace RGBA" message to pix_film before loading your quicktime.
In my experience only Final Cut can render properly the alpha channel and there is a trick to it:
-exporte with "FCP movie" (not Quicktime) -go to custom settings in QT video settings select ANIMATION -next, still in QT video settings you go to ADVANCED and select MILLIONS COLOR +

My installation "Oracle" had an uptime of 200 days at one point, the machine does not reboot or anything, so Its actually running that process for 200 days. PD/Gem-0.87 on linux.
Only failed when the power went out. (no UPS)

i've made some similar experience ... 24 machines playing video files and displaying images for about 6 monthes ... but i had some problems finding the right video codec, that was fast enough and didn't suffer from memory leaks ...

I have an installation running 9-12 simultaneous small quicktimes on XP for about year now (FWISH @ http://mrtof.danslchamp.org/). I do not know of any crashes.
Gem XP crashes when you switch quicktimes. I made an abstraction that solves this problem. If you need it, I can send it. It is not final but works.
If you want to DIY, just create a separate pix_film (or pix_movie) for every quicktime. Then with Zexy's demux, send the gem "signal" to the selected movie to play. SUPER STABLE!

This is the crash that I have a fix for. Are there other cases where films crash?
AVI files work WORSE for me than quicktime in XP - an issue with codecs perhaps?
I'm using the latest PD-extended stable release.

last i dug into GEM source, a couple years ago, it was still not using DirectShow filters to input the files, so installing a codec in the system wouldnt give it a chance at being readable insid GEM. if you want nice AVI/windows codec support, try VVVV. if youre runing windows and want something fully native and embracing the capabilities the OS has to offer and dont mind being able to peek at the source, it is the way to go..

The only AVI files I can even get to load are some old Indeo codec. The rest of them (Cinepak and DV) are opened by the QT avi importer. At some point a proper DirectShow loader needs to happen, but I won't speculate on when.
PS - you missed the Chicago Pd meet last night - although we did zero Pd stuff.
