Hey all,
is anyone else having difficulties running either version of Pd-
extended on OS X 10.5 "Leopard"? Whenever I hit the "Help" menu item,
the whole program crashes. After this point, I am no longer able to
save files, as the program will then crash upon save. I wouldn't be
surprised if this is a leopard issue, has anyone had any luck getting
around it?
I've attached my crashlog.
Thanks, ~Brandon
Hi
Apple released 10.5.1 update today and it was hoped that it might
solve this issue, but it doesn't seem to be any different.
hopefully this will be rectified soon!
thanks

I am in the process of upgrading the Tcl/Tk version for the nightly
builds. I should have it done today, so tomorrow's build should
include it. The new version of Tcl/Tk is supposed to address some of
these crashes (I think they are related to Apple changing somethings
in the push to make everything 64-bit, but I could be wrong).
Please let me know whether this works for all y'all early adopters :)

that sounds promising. I don't want to say this loud, but I had to switch to max to do some work that needs to get done immediately. (the problem is more related to Gem) at least I will be able to write good documentation about the differences betw. gem/jitter pd/max and maybe think about translators for the future. Is miller's pd using another tcl/tk version than pd-extended? marius.

Hello,
8-(
Leopard updated. Pd still crashing...
This can be a really idiot question, but I was reading the comment abut Miller's version and thinking, why PD-extended is not a really an "extension" of PD? Like a module? Why it must be a complete package? If it is only the help integration, why not develop a support engine in separate? Register new libraries is not so difficult.
If this question is really idiot, please ignore...

for the most part, pd-extended _is_ a (collection of) module(s), aka
"externals".

Miller's Pd doesn't have the Help menu enhancements, and it uses the
built-in version of Tcl/Tk, which is quite a bit slower.

what do you mean with a funky error? i mean, can you paste the error please?
i never compiled this ojects on a ppc but i think the problem could be
more in the plugins ... for example some freeframe plugins make use of
mmx operations that are not supported in ppc architecture...have you compiled the freeframe plugins?

try to use the -fPIC in your compilation ...
i don's have a ppc machine to try it but googling a little bit i found
some people with similar problems compiling x86 code in ppc systems ::
( ... ) Most likely, you didn't compile the library with -fpic (or -fPIC). There should not be a R_PPC_REL24 reloc in a shared library compiled with -fpic, and libraries not compiled with -fpic or -fPIC are not guaranteed to work. ( ... )
give it a try ;)

Here's Daniel Steffen's notes on this, from Tk CVS:
* macosx/tkMacOSXCarbonEvents.c
(InstallStandardApplicationEventHandler): on Mac OS X
Leopard, replace
the 2005-11-27 approach of installing the standard
application handler
by calling RAEL and immediately longjmping out of it from an
event
handler, as that now leads to crashes in -[NSView
unlockFocus] whenever
HIToolbox uses Cocoa in Leopard (Help menu, Nav Services, Color
Picker). Instead call InstallStandardEventHandler() on the
application
and menubar event targets, as Leopard ISEH finally handles
these
correctly. Unfortunately need a HIToolbox-internal SPI to
retrieve the
menubar event target, no public API appears have that
functionality.

Hi
Apple released 10.5.1 update today and it was hoped that it might solve this issue, but it doesn't seem to be any different.
hopefully this will be rectified soon!

Hey all,
is anyone else having difficulties running either version of Pd- extended on OS X 10.5 "Leopard"? Whenever I hit the "Help" menu item, the whole program crashes. After this point, I am no longer able to save files, as the program will then crash upon save. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a leopard issue, has anyone had any luck getting around it?
I've attached my crashlog.

yes, there is a list of bugs with 10.5. some of them are only related to pd-extenden, but not to the pd version that can be downloaded from miller's page. for example the help menu crash and the crash on save are only related to pd-extended. if you want to go with that inbetween... marius.
