Sorry, I should have sayed that I was runing on IRIX and I was maybe a bit to fast to send the last mail. The problem was solved by recompiling PD.

Hi,
Its still not possible to output 8 channels in PD 0.28p2. If you start
PD with -outchannels 8 you get an error: _ALerror: code=11 ALsetchannels: invalid number of channels: 8
I still need to run my own patch to fix this problem.

I understand this is a reaaaaally old message thread but what is the solution to this problem please? I just tried to use my ADAT interface on my SGI Octane to play out more than 2 channels of audio and ran into this issue again.
ALsetchannels: invalid number of channels: 8
I’m running pd-032-irix on IRIX 6.5.22
If someone can kindly point me to the solution that would be appreciated!
And in case you can point me to a newer version compiled for IRIX that would be fantastic!
Thank you, Wolfgang
Wow, Pd from the year 2000 still running! Well, the last IRIX version of Pd was 0.34, from 2001:
https://msp.ucsd.edu/Software/pd-0.34-3.irix.tar.Z
It takes arguments to set number of channels, for instance:
pd -inchannels 8 -outchannels 8
... the maximum was 8. I think it was necessary to specify the exact number of channels the interface had because there was no way for Pd to open IRIX devices with fewer of them, so that opening an 8-channel device in stereo would have failed. But I can't verify this, having no IRIX machine handy :)

Great, thank you very much, that works, 8 channels of ADAT I/O!
People use PD with a ARM Cortex M7 (~160 MFLOPS) https://forum.electro-smith.com/t/plugdata-new-pd-environment-that-can-flash... then an SGI Octane should still be good too. The R14000 has two FPUs with 64bit (double-precision) running at clock speed per FLOP, so an Octane with Dual R14000 @ 600MHz has a theoretical 2.4 GFLOPS, not bad for a vintage workstation :)
Thank you, Wolfgang
