I was only talking about this special case where the folder has the same name as the object. I just wanted to dispute the notion that [declare -lib hid] behaves different than plain [hid] in respect to search paths.

explicitly when they are needed.
I don't get it. When I do [hid] - without [declare -lib] -, it will be exactly loaded when needed.

you're right in case of this specific object since this external consists of only one object which is synonymous with the folder it resides in.
but let's take for example an object like [pmenu] from the TOF library (without any startup search paths):
1.) [pmenu] -> can't be found 2.) [tof/pmenu] -> will be loaded 3.) [pmenu] with [declare -path tof] -> will be loaded
