hi,
i have to work in the next weeks with pd on macosx.
i use hcs package (thx for the work !)
one thing makes me wonder: why is the updaterate of the interface so slow ? can i change it - or is this not a good idea ?

...a bit vague here: are you talking about opening windows and
drawing patches, or updating specific number boxes, or...? Tcl/Tk on
osx is basically an emulated x11, so there are differences, but I've
not found anything completely unusable...but then I've never done a
complete analysis of Tcl/TkX11onOSX vs Tcl/TkAquaOSX, which would be
helpful, I imagine...

I have to report having the same problem with HC`s PD 0.39 on OSX. Not only does the PD GUI respond quite slowly (i.e during all of the actions you inquire about in your mail plus everything else)
...a bit vague here: are you talking about opening windows and
drawing patches, or updating specific number boxes, or...?
but the whole OSX desktop responds very poorly while PD is running (with or without DSP, no GEM or PDP at all). Is the TclTK X11 emulation very CPU intensive? I haven`t seen this problem with earlier PD versions on OSX.

The 0.39 version that I put out was an early test version. I wouldn't
use it for serious work since its got lots of bugs. 0.38-4 is more
stable. If you want to use 0.39, download 0.39-1 from Miller's site,
or wait for me to put out an extended build in the next month or two.

I guess its hard for me to tell what degree of slowness you are talking
about. On a slower machine, OSX's GUI will be a bit sluggish. Tcl/Tk
is slower than standard OSX apps, but Jamie Tittle has done a lot to
help that. I have a PowerBook G4 800, so definitely not a screamer.
The GUI is a bit sluggish, but totally usable. But it does not slow
down the rest of my apps when I run Pd (unless its swapping or
something).
But if its not usable, or its painful, then there is probably something
wrong. Also, the version of 0.39 that I put out is an early test
release. Either use Miller's Pd-0.39-1, or Pd-0.38.4-extendedRC2.app
