hi willem,
I read:
Oh well...Guess I'll just install Linux...
good
Anyone got a distro recommendation for this kinda thing?
I avoid starting a flamewar, but I guess best supported would be debian (a lot of people here use it, there's lots of packages in demudi/agnula) or you could for planet ccrma (http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/) which is redhat based. generally I'd recommend to use what someone in your neighborhood who you can call late at night is most familiar with (if you consider your- self a newbie).
I'm guessing it wouldn't be a particularly good idea to try running PD + GridFlow under VMware...has anybody tried?
sorry to say that but gridflow with pd is absolutely _not_ usable yet. (I wish it was) but there is also pdp (http://zwizwa.fartit.com/pd/pdp/) which works fine and has some objects to convert between sound/bitmap and vice versa.
regards,
x
Yeah, I was looking at Debian/Demudi...Appears to be good from what I could gather. But people seem to have more valid opinions than websites.
I'd probably try jMax with gridflow rather than sticking with PD. What I was really wondering was whether running this kind of thing under VMWare was plausible.
I have a tendency to not bother rebooting whenever I go dual boot...and just not going into my second OS. That's why I'd like to be able to use VMWare...I guess the best thing to do is just to try it. Or just to bother rebooting...
Off to download Debian then...damn...7CDs
Cheers
Willem

do a net install instead of downloading all of the images. you will never use most of the stuff on the cds. even less if you plan to run unstable, which is very likely if you want to try and track something like pd.
maybe buy the cds (or a dvd) from some local vendor for peace of mind after you have checked it out.

I wouldn't run such a thing under Vmware. I never tried, but you get an emulation layer in between, which probably is bad for latency. But why don't you just install Pd on Windows? Gem runs there, as well. You don't *need* to run Linux for Pd. I am a long time Linux user and I only use Windows at work, but although I'd be glad to have more people join the free software movement, nobody has to.
