Would this issue be exclusive of Linux installations?
One of my main problems now is not understanding the "portability" issues.

Oh yes, i remember that issue now... there's a flag called FLEXT_CMEM which inhibits overriding the new/delete operators.
To my knowledge the flag is set by default for versions within the last 3 years or so. I'll check later to be sure.
