just incase anyone runs across the same problem, this appeared to be caused by the version of tcl/tk 8.4 in debian unstable. downgrading to 8.3 made pd useable once more.

playing around with an old box running the latest pd i received a strange error. after noticing that all my patches had nothing in them, i attempted to add an object which gave this:
//-->
Consistency check failed: glist_findrtext Segmentation fault socket receive error: Connection reset by peer.
//<--
examining the patches in a text editor reveals that everything is there, for some reason they are not being rendered. i recompiled pd which gave no change in this area. this is a debian i386 box running the latest alsa - i seem to remember it being fine last time i looked. pd -verbose gives no more clues.
audio is not stuck on the box and alsa runs fine.
