There's a very simple answer to this in PD. If you click the media menu on your toolbar and 'test audio and midi'. This is a patch designed to test audio and midi hardware, it's also a good place to find the basic midi objects.
There's not a huge number of compatability issues with midi devices, you'll be glad to know.
Remember: you have to plug in usb midi devices before starting PD and select them as inputs and/or outputs in your midi settings (I'm not sure about fedora but in other linux versions it's also in the media menu).

Subject: [PD] Midi device test patch?
Hi everyone,
I m going to buy a usb midi keyboard sometime soon, but i'd like to test it on my laptop first because the salesman cannot garantee that it will work in Fedora 12. The problem is that i've never used any of the midi objects in Pd. Does any of you know of a simple patch for testing midi devices? Even just a few directions to build one myself would be very helpful.
Cheers!
Pierre
