I ran a 90 day installation using pd and Gem without trouble. Again only when the gallery lost power did it go down. A flash server let me tweak it remotely/daily as well
Good luck!

I also made some good experience with Pd in installation surroundings. also with old computers. one installation is running for more than two years now. two others were running for a half year each. the problem is rather the hardware (esp. with older hardware, where harddisks and mainboards can break.) all of the installations start by turning on a main switch / resp. the fuses of the whole room. linux (I use debian) is preferred, I also unmount harddisks after startup and having everything in the RAM to prevent harddisk damage by powerblackouts. on both, osx and windows you could run into problems when changing from summer to wintertime in longtime installations and on mac os(9?) I once saw problems with large temp files (that was not a Pd installation). marius.

I've used Pd in a number of installations and its great for this, especially when running on GNU/Linux. For this installation:
I ran the whole thing on a discarded PC running Pd on Debian. It would automatically start up the installation on boot, and I set it up so that the disks ran synchronously so that it could be power- cycled without worrying about losing data. They had random power outages, so it had to come back by itself. It did crash sometimes (you can probably blame my programming), but the gallery people could just flip the power to get it going again. Yes, it takes time to set up Debian, and to make things start up like that. But it has saved me probably days worth of troubleshooting time, so it was well worth it.
There are a number of other examples of installations running Pd, there is a permanent sound installation in a park in Vienna that runs Pd. IEM's 24-channel ambisonic setup runs Pd. There is an installation here at NIME/Agora @ IRCAM that is running Pd. So its definitely ready for prime time.

i'm developing an installation for a public-access augmented table educational interface. i'd like to use pd bu i'm not sure about its long-term stability.
previously the place i'm working has used cps (http:// cps.bonneville.nl/) - i'm wondering, has anyone here had any experiences with cps? could they recommend it/or not?
or pd for that matter - how reliable might pd be in an 8 hrs a day 7 days a week installation 500km away from where i live? would using pd here be a dumb idea?
