Hallo!
Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be ? Do players like vlc, mplayer, ... use additional filters to give better results ?
it turned out that the problem was a badly configured X-server (set to a depthof 16bit!) Gem defaults to 24bit-depth; if it fails to get 24bits, it will fall back to 8bit, which usually is _bad_ quality!
the other players obviously could make better use of the 16bit depth, that is why they looked better.
so for all of you, who experience bad image quality: read carefully what Gem says on the console! there might be a hint, saying "Only using 8 color bits"; make sure that you set the default colour depth to 24bit (or higher)
