Two things:
space at the START of the disk for your Linux partitions. This is because the Open Firmware steps through the partitions in _order_ searching for a boot loader. If it doesn't find Yaboot - the Linux bootloader first, it will boot straight into MacOS.
your chipset supports. CK is right about the nvidia cards being largely unsupported, but even with an ATI card, I have only ever been able to get XFree86 to run in 8-bit mode!
To bring things back on topic though - Debian on PPC should work great for PD - I don't know about GEM and the video stuff...
