Evidently I didn't know enough about aconnect, though I have had the aconnectgui (no hyphen btw) up many times.
Now I did

 purr-data -alsamidi -mididev 1,2,3 &

paul@velikiHP:~/Dropbox/composition workshop$ remove_client 130 / 1
32 128

and lo and behold, got midi in from the WX5 via the MidiSport 2x2, as shown by ALSA sequencer aka aconnectgui which I already had running.
[I had some idea that the aconnectgui ought to allow graphic interaction but it doesn't.]

With aconnect, you can use the string name for the device to connect to it, you don't need the indices. Some caveats: if you are scripting Pd startup, you will need to wait until the  Pd MIDI devices are actually listed in also before you can connect to them..

If you use aconnect-gui, basically just connect you devices output to Pd's input.

testone.pd however shows no midi input from any device.
