I had such a problem (ubuntu 9.04) the simplest solution in my case was to disable Pulseaudio and use ALSA only.

Dear list: hello to everybody....i have a problem, in the university i
request about a second partition with ubuntu 9.04 for working with pd, they
use a mac intel intel core 2 duo, desktop line, i installed pd and work, but
the sound no...in all the system.

Any idea or command in terminal? dependences? pulse audio????
