otoh, releasing the audio backend, allows other software to steal the audio card. i think this is a feature not a bug.
I think it's both... my current plan (which I could be talked out of) would be to add a new option to keep audio device open regardless of DSP being on or off. Probably jack users will want the option 'on' and most others will want it "off".
I was just going to suggest that those could be separate options: DSP on/off, audio back-end connect/disconnect.
